Faux finishes—a French word which means ”false” or ”artificial”—used to be strictly the preserve of the professional decorator.
But now, with a little practice, it’s possible to create these beautiful finishes yourself.
All faux finishes are carried out by hand, with the result that each one is absolutely unique, giving the surfaces and objects you use them on a truly personal touch.

To see inspirational results on how to turn ordinary walls into extraordinary works of art, an excellent starting point is the BEHR CD-ROM—Faux Finishing Techniques (available in any Home Depot).
This interactive CD-ROM shows you how the various finishes should look, and gives you step-by-step professional application instructions for all the most popular techniques.
We recommend you begin by creating a focal point wall with basic techniques, such as the simpler sponging or ragging options.
Then, when you’ve mastered basic techniques, it’s fun to move on and learn the more advanced finishes.
Here’s a guide to some of the effects you can achieve.

Sponging creates a pattern by using a water-dampened sea sponge to either apply color to, or remove it from, the base color.

Ragging creates a lacy, elegant look by using a water-dampened cloth rag to either apply color to, or remove it from, the base color.
