The bathroom is perhaps the most enjoyable room in any home to decorate.

While you do have to work with certain practical limitations—principally the fixtures and the room layout—bathrooms are generally somewhat closed off from the other rooms of the house.

This can give you a lot of scope for doing something a little different.

The bathroom is a place where you can really experiment with the power of paint, one of decorating’s most potent mood-creating tools.

Decide in advance on the feeling you’d like to create. A soothing haven for the soul, peaceful, cool and totally simple, with subtle personal touches?

Opulent, regal and relaxing? Charming, cool and quirky?

Whatever you decide, don’t be afraid to make your bathroom highly individual, while still reflecting your personal home design style—whether that’s traditional or modern, country or casual.

Consider using stronger color schemes. Black and white, or orange and blue, can be fun in a bathroom, whereas they might be overpowering in a living room or a bedroom.

Mix textures (laminates, towels, mats, and plants, for example), with different wall and floor colors.

Try your hand at Faux Finishing techniques (see Having Fun with Faux).

While your bathroom paint needs to be tough, waterproof and easy to clean, don’t confuse practical with clinical.

Aim to create a haven of peace and solitude, where you can relax and unwind after an exhausting day.

Traditional. Calming and comfortable, traditionally decorated
bathrooms offer a sophisticated but understated look. Fixtures, hardware and furnishings have a classic but enduring appearance.

Tip Accentuate distinctive architectural features (such as window frames and moldings) by painting them a lighter or darker tone than the wall color.

Modern. Bathrooms decorated in a modern style are simple and uncluttered, with wall colors that contrast highly with objects in the room, to help emphasize their sculptural qualities.

Tip Shapes as simple and inexpensive as folded towels and paper globe lights can be used to create an interesting and rhythmic design.

Country. Today’s country styles aren’t fussy or folksy. They’re about capturing the simple, honest joys of a more relaxed style of living.

Tip A country bathroom is an excellent place to experiment with simple faux wall painting, to lend the room unpretentious sophistication and style.

Casual. Color can unify casual décor. Using different tones of a monochromatic (or single-color) scheme allows the eye to accept various textures and materials, while still showcasing the individuality of each.

Tip Flat Enamel, Eggshell, Satin or Semi-Gloss are preferable to Hi-Gloss in bathroom, as this may encourage condensation.

Try the ColorSmart™ by BEHR interactive program to experiment with thousands of different color combinations and see how they look in actual room settings.
