Color of the Year: Emerald Green

by Erika Woelfel

Move over lime, citron and granny apple green, elegant emerald is the hot new color of 2013. I couldn’t be more thrilled! This means cool, blue-touched green is no longer appropriate only at St. Patrick’s Day parties. Since last fall, this distinguished jewel tone has appeared as a fashion accessory color for shoes, purses and jewelry. Be ready for it to move off the runways and into your home before you can say Emerald City!

The question becomes: How do you use emerald green in a decorative setting? It is amazingly easy. Because it is strong and vibrant at the same time, emerald works great in small doses or as an accent. Deeper versions will look more conservative and sophisticated. Lighter versions of blue-green in mint and jade will look fresh and youthful.

Examples below show different ways to use emerald, no matter what kind of décor style you have:

A white and emerald combo easily works with the strong lines in this modern vignette.

A black accompaniment with emerald feels mysterious and elegant.

A tropical theme uses emerald green as an accent in bedding and window treatments.

Deep emerald fits well into Asian-inspired décor.

Colorfully yours,

Erika
