In our home, we are lucky to have a spare bedroom, but not a room that can be solely dedicated to an office for myself. Therefore, the spare bedroom has to function as both a guest bedroom and an office. The previous set-up I had in this space just was not working.

It seemed that the office area was taking over too much of the bedroom area. After doing some rearranging and visually dividing the room with two different paint colours, we finally have a functional space for both guests and myself.

This makeover was really simple. To create the feel of two different spaces in the room, I used two different paint colours – a creamy white and a rich black.

Most of my room was already painted in Behr's Creamy White. If your room is not already painted a colour that you want to keep, go ahead and paint all the walls except one in your new colour. Choose one wall to be painted black (mine was the wall the bed is against). Use a 2” paint brush to paint the edges of your walls first and then come back and roll on the paint.

“While painting walls black is a bold move, the use of black and white together helps to anchor the space since there is a lot going on in the room. ” - Behr Limousine Leather

One Coat And You're Done

I opted to go with BEHR MARQUEE paint because of its one-coat coverage. Sometimes painting black over something as different as white can take multiple coats. With MARQUEE, it's one coat and you’re done.

I opted to paint one of my walls all black. I did this for a couple of reasons. I wanted the focus of this space to be the bedroom and not the office. Therefore, I painted the wall behind the bed all black. This is also the first wall you see when you walk into the room, so I wanted to make a statement with it.

After painting one wall all black, I opted to paint the two adjoining walls half black and half white. I did this so that it wouldn’t be too stark of a difference between the black and white. To do this, measure 48” from the floor up and mark this measurement along the wall. Run painter’s tape along the tick marks, then paint the lower half of the walls black. Immediately after painting the final coat, remove the tape.

"After all the paint was good and dry, I moved the furniture back in, but with a different arrangement."

The bed stayed on the wall it had always been on. Where the desk had been, I placed a dresser. On the wall that is only seen once you enter and turn in the room, I placed my desk. I kept this wall completely white to differentiate between the bedroom space and the office space.

This space works so much better for me (and hopefully guests too!) now that my office is confined to one corner of the room.

Do you have any rooms that have multiple uses in your house? Could you make them more functional by dividing the space with paint? Give it a try. You'll be thrilled with the results!
