Let the how to guide from the experts at Behr show you how to achieve the exact look you want in your home.A Faux Finish is easily created by applying one or more colored glazes over a new or existing base color. Interested in using your existing surface color as the base color? No problem, as long as it is in good condition. If you’re choosing a new base color, we recommend PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® or PREMIUM PLUS® Interior Paint in a Eggshell, Satin, or Semi-Gloss Enamel sheen.
To prepare your topcoat glaze color, pour 1 part PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® or PREMIUM PLUS® Paint (one quart) and 4 parts FAUX GLAZE (one gallon) into a bucket and mix the contents thoroughly. For a more see-through or transparent look, add extra faux glaze to the mixture. For a denser or more opaque glaze color, add more paint to the mixture. The mixture will generally cover approximately 400 sq. ft.
TIP: Mix the entire quantity of glazing color needed for the project before you start painting. Combining the contents produces uniformity of color. This intermixing is called “boxing.”
Pour your color glaze mixture into a paint tray and work a 6” mini roller into the glaze until it is fully loaded. To remove excess glaze, roll the tool on the ribbed area of the paint tray.
TIP: Test your technique and color combinations on a practice board before you begin the project.Starting at a top corner of your project area, roll the colored glaze onto a 3’ x 3’ section. While the glaze is wet, bunch up a damp cloth rag and gently roll it over the colored glaze. You will be removing some of the glaze color and allowing some of the base color to show through.
TIP: When your rag becomes saturated with colored glaze, wring it out or switch to a fresh damp rag.Continue to work in 3’ x 3’ sections. Overlap and blend each section as you go to avoid hard edges.
TIP: Stand back and preview your work periodically to ensure an even look.Repeat the process until the project is complete.Colors Used: Base Color: Seven Seas 560D-6, Glaze Color: Thick Chocolate 750B-7
