A Desert Oasis of Color

by Erika Woelfel

This week, we want to give the spotlight treatment to a place that is using Behr to do some amazing things with color. Located in beautiful Joshua Tree, California, Spin and Margie’s Desert “Hide-a-Way” is almost the polar opposite of the tans and greens of its desert backdrop. Its proprietors—Drew “Spin” and Mindy “Margie” Kaufman—repaint their five-suite inn with BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® Paint whenever the mood strikes them. Their only rule is that their rooms must be more colorful and whimsical than what their visitors are used to seeing. We took a look inside the “Desert Rambler” suite to see how Spin and Margie used our colors to make their customers say “Wow, this looks nothing like my home!”

Don’t have this combination of turquoise, red and brown in your home? That’s great! To Spin and Margie, hearing that their rooms look nothing like your home (in a good way!) is the ultimate compliment.

The furniture in this suite is every bit as interesting as the paint colors. Check out how well the table and chairs play with the Curry Powder used in the dining room.

What a difference light makes! Note how the same paint color can look almost yellow in the light, and on the other wall look completely brown.

The progression from brown to blue to red may sound unusual, but it totally works when moving from the suite’s workstation to the bedroom.

Super saturated hues, like this red, make for a dramatic alternative to the oppressive heat and beige tones of the surrounding desert.

All five of Spin and Margie’s eclectic suites showcase unique bold color palettes to achieve their desired response. You can check out the others at https://www.deserthideaway.com/. The Spin and Margie’s blog is also a great way to keep up with what’s new at the inn and to find some amazing pictures of the national park.
