Perfect Shades of Gray

by Erika Woelfel

Gray seems to be the color on everyone’s mind these days. The fashion outlets are full of gray clothes for fall, and even the weather is turning grayer as the days get shorter!

Gray is the perfect neutral- accommodating any decorating style and coming in a wide variety of light and dark tones. It also plays well with almost any bold color, and harmonizes with other materials like wood and stone. Twilight was a gray forecasted in the 2013 trend palette www.behr.com and it is still picking up steam!

Lots of readers are asking for the perfect shade of neutral gray, balanced somewhere between a warm and cool option. The truth is, most grays contain a hint of another color like blue or green, red or yellow. The most livable grays have a little bit more brown, making them warmer and cozier. Cool gray, the ones that show a touch of blue, feel quietly sophisticated. With so many personalities to the color gray, it is difficult to pick just one! Take a look at several we’ve highlighted in the images below…

Tones of gray in nature have a wide range, from fog and mist to stone and smoke.

Warm gray makes a perfect background to emphasize the contoured shape of this free-standing bath tub.

Black adds depth to this hallway area, while gray and white provide balance. Use pops of bright color in artwork or furnishings to create a focal point.

Wood tones in furniture or flooring warm the appearance of a masculine gray bedroom.

Light gray with a touch of blue creates a relaxed atmosphere in this sophisticated bedroom. Black bedding makes a dramatic focal point while shiny surfaces in mirrors and fabric add visual interest.

A few more favorites from the BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Paint and BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® Paint palettes available at The Home Depot®!

Our deck is beautiful . Used Behr Solid deck stain on the bottom and Behr Weather proof paint on the verticle side…. Altho we had custom color mix, the colors are similar to suede grey + gentle rain . Don’t know if you can see this pic. IMG_1987.JPG

Hello. I am painting my whole house gray (interior). I have tried 7 Behr colors, but they have either blue/purple or brownish tones. I wanted a more neutral and very light gray, so house doesn’t darken. My preferred, of all I tried, is Winds Breath, but I’d like it slightly less brownish and slightly, just very slightly darker. Please help.

    • Deanna Torrez says:

Hello J, thank you for your interest in BEHR Products! Here are a couple grays that will not have a blue/purple tone – Nightingale Gray N200-3, Graceful Gray PPU18-12, Doeskin Gray N200-2.

I am painting a living room with natural gray … the floors are light hardwood and the furniture is dark brown leather … have I made the right choice?

    • Deanna Torrez says:

      Michelle,
Thank you for your interest in BEHR Paint!

Being that Natural Gray is on the warmer side it is a nice choice to pair with the light hardwood floors and dark brown furniture.

Hi I have a navy blue sofa and grey dining table I was thinking light grey carpet and walls what do you suggest for a paint color

    • Deanna Torrez says:

      Ishaa,
Thank you for your interest in Behr paint!

For walls you can do a medium toned gray with a hint of blue which would work such as Classic Silver PPU18-11, or French Silver PPU18-05. Or you cam also do a light airy color such as Coastal Beige PPU7-13, Ash Blue N470-1 or Flowing Breeze N480-2.

We have a small house in the woods near a lake. In the living room we have a medium to dark brown color sofa – the walls have white wainscoating on the bottom – and am unsure what color to paint the top of the walls.. My husband would like gray but am unsure if that would work and if so which shade of gray.

  20. Tracey says:

    Hi Deanna,
I’m hoping you can help with some suggestions. I’ve painted my entire first floor in seagull gray (love it. It looks sage-y in some light but is so much better than the purple of the White Metal…cringe). Our bedrooms are Icicle (which makes my heart happy every time I walk in our master) and Morning Zen in our guest. My husband and I have both begrudgingly decided to do white trim, but were wondering if we could pull of doing something more muted than the bright white. Perhaps an off white/really light (non-purple undertoned) gray. We have all our windows painted in Night Club. What would you suggest? Thanks!

    • Deanna Torrez says:

      Hi Tracey,
Thank you for your interest in BEHR Paint!

I was hoping you could help out with a issue I have! I just bought a house that currently has tan/beige walls everywhere! I want my living room to have blue and grey walls. We really like Clear Vista for blue and picked out French silver and cathedral grey, but both look VERY purple in the room. I was reading though that the reflection of the tan walls could be making the color look purple, or that greys with tan undertones work well for true grey walls, What grey color would you recommend that isn’t going to look purple? I was hoping for a very true grey color.

    • Deanna Torrez says:

      Hello Courtney,
Thank you for your interest in BEHR Paint!
Both French Silver and Cathedral Gray are cooler tones of gray which may appear blue or purple.

Hi, thanks for this article. I was wondering if Classic Silver PPU18-11 had a purple undertone? I’m redoing my kitchen with white cabinet and a laminate countertop (Calacatta Marble formica) that has green (cool) undertone. I do not want to end up with a violet looking wall next to my white/green undertone countertop. Thanks.

    • Deanna Torrez says:

      Hello Roxane,
Thank you for your interest in BEHR Products!

Classic Silver does not have a purple undertone, though it does have a cool tone to it.

    Hi,
I just had my house built so my walls are currently white. I don’t mind the white, I actually kind of like it because it makes my house feel bright, but I know I should put some color in. I would like something light and a true gray that would match with my gray/taupe tile (chronicle script tile) and furniture which is a medium gray color. I don’t want to lose the lightness in my home as well as the illusion that it is big. What colors would you suggest?

Due to differences in monitors and technical factors, the colors here cannot be represented with
their true qualities. These color samples should only be considered a guide. Please refer to actual swatches for true color. We strongly recommend beginning with an 8 oz. sample container of the color you choose and apply it to a small area on your wall to ensure your satisfaction with the color choice. It is always a good idea to see how the light and ambient conditions affect the color at different points in the day.

Hi, I am painting the outside of my house. My husband and I see colors very differently. It is a one story rambler, very typical NW. We currently have a red door and there are shutters. We are thinking about camping tent, Grey squirrel, Flannel Grey or Confederate grey. I confess that I am not very good at picking colors. Can you make a suggestion? Also, what white would you coordinate for the trim? Thanks!

      Hey Vicky,
If you are looking for a great versatile gray for an exterior, we suggest you check out these colors: Silver Marlin N360-2, Classic Silver PPU18-11 and Silver City MQ2-39.

We remodeled our kitchen to all white cabinets and white calacata quartz, our floors are a dark brown tile That looks like wood. I was going for a light or medium neutral grey but when I was looking at colors I went with silverstone. So I went ahead and bought the paint and handed it to the painters thinking it would look as it did on the sample card. At the end of the day I walk in my home and it looks purple/dark blueish lavender . I wish someone would’ve recommended buying the 8oz sample before my whole living area was painted it’s not an ugly color but definitely not what I wanted.

We just recently painted the interior of our home with Graceful Grey. We are looking to do a feature wall with a darker grey that would match. Any suggestions that would pair nicely with Graceful Grey?

I want to paint the exterior of my home grey. I have some existing siding on parts of the house that are a beige color. What grey color paint would you recommend that would look good against the beige? Thank you

    • Deanna Torrez says:

      Hello Theresa,

I recommend the following gray tones to coordinate with your beige siding.

Fashion Gray PPU18-15, Slate Rock N460-5, Greige PPU24-11 or Ancestral PPU24-05.
