{"id":11027,"date":"2016-01-28T17:57:46","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T01:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/?p=11027"},"modified":"2020-05-05T08:45:42","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T15:45:42","slug":"the-heart-of-mexico-guanajuato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/the-heart-of-mexico-guanajuato\/","title":{"rendered":"The Heart of Mexico- Guanajuato"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11032 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Looking-Down-to-Guanajuato-Hero.jpg\" alt=\"High angle view of Guanajuato cityscape with it's colorful houses and church. \" width=\"740\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Looking-Down-to-Guanajuato-Hero.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Looking-Down-to-Guanajuato-Hero-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><br \/>\nDuring the winter holidays I took a vacation to Mexico City. \u00a0Having been being born and raised there, I opted to explore a city I&#8217;ve never visited. \u00a0Deviating from my original itinerary, I detoured to the city of Guanajuato. <!--more-->Located northwest Mexico City, Guanajuato is a friendly place and relatively unknown treasure amongst visiting tourists. \u00a0This has enabled the old silver mining town to retain its unique character and charming local traditions. \u00a0During my trip I stayed at quaint in-town\u00a0apartment that offered a terrific value for my money, participated in town events, and savored authentic local foods and colorful candy.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11031 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Cobbled-Stone-Streets-and-Allley-in-Guanajuato.jpg\" alt=\"Colorful street scenes of historic town of Guanajuato listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.\" width=\"740\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Cobbled-Stone-Streets-and-Allley-in-Guanajuato.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Cobbled-Stone-Streets-and-Allley-in-Guanajuato-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The\u00a0architecture\u00a0of Guanajuato is Spanish colonial, the color is all it&#8217;s own. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first night I took\u00a0part take in a &#8220;callejoneada&#8221;, or evening street party, which departs nightly from the San Diego church on the Jard\u00edn de la Uni\u00f3n. \u00a0Leading the callejoneada, was a group of student musicians referred to as &#8220;estudiantinas&#8221;. \u00a0We\u00a0toured the historic center of Guanajuato including the Alondiga de Granadita and the Kissing Alley- a super narrow alley, while dancing to live music, listening to local legends, and sipping tequila from a very unique looking cup.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11029 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Callejoneada-Jug.jpg\" alt=\"A unique ceramic jug.\" width=\"740\" height=\"950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Callejoneada-Jug.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Callejoneada-Jug-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><br \/>\nThe great architecture of this gorgeous city was built with the enormous wealth generated from silver mining during the 17th and 18th centuries. At that time, Guanajuato was the source for one third of the world\u2019s silver supply.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11033 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Mina-El-Nopal-1808.jpg\" alt=\"The entrance to El Nopal, an old mine from the mid 18th century.\" width=\"740\" height=\"950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Mina-El-Nopal-1808.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Mina-El-Nopal-1808-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>El Nopal is an old mine from the mid 18<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was an amazing\u00a0adventure walking down cobbled streets and alleyways, discovering new and unexpected things around every corner. \u00a0My exploration expanded to a neighboring town- San Miguel de Allende. Whether on public buildings or private houses, newly painted or beautifully aged, the doors and windows of San Miguel de Allende are made to be noticed.
