I decided on seaside feel with a blue-green and white color scheme. I added a pop of brilliant turquoise to the back panel to give it more depth and interest.<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>For this project you will need the following:<\/strong><br \/>\nBookcase to paint<br \/>\nSander and fine-grit sandpaper &#8211; a power sander can help get the prep-work done quicker.<br \/>\nPrimer- I choose Kilz Complete for it&#8217;s ability to adhere to plastics.<br \/>\nPaint in the color(s) of your choice<strong>. <\/strong>I chose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/consumer\/products\/interior-paint-and-primer\/behr-alkyd-semi-gloss-enamel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BEHR\u00ae Alkyd Semi-gloss Enamel<\/a> to get a glossy lacquered look.<br \/>\nPainting Supplies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paint Tray<\/li>\n<li>Paint Tray Liners<\/li>\n<li>Paint Drop Cloth<\/li>\n<li>Painter\u2019s Tape<\/li>\n<li>Painter\u2019s Paper<\/li>\n<li>Paint brushes \/ Mini-rollers<\/li>\n<li>Gloves<\/li>\n<li>Mask<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8999 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Painting-Supplies.jpg\" alt=\"DYI painting supplies. Position the bookcase to be painted over the cloths. Put on a face mask and gloves, if desired, before beginning the project.<br \/>\n<strong>Step 2: Remove the shelves and shelf brackets- if applicable.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9000 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Remove-Shelves.jpg\" alt=\"Removing shelves from bookcase.\" width=\"514\" height=\"671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Remove-Shelves.jpg 514w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Remove-Shelves-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Step 3: Sand the entire bookcase.<\/strong><br \/>\nRemove the current finish to create a surface the paint can adhere to.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9001 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Sand-Entire-Bookcase.jpg\" alt=\"A woman's hand using an electric wood sander to strip down a wooden surface in preparation for furniture renovation.\" width=\"514\" height=\"702\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Sand-Entire-Bookcase.jpg 514w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Sand-Entire-Bookcase-220x300.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Step 4: Wipe down your bookcase. <\/strong><br \/>\nWhen you\u2019ve finished sanding you will need to remove all the dust.\u00a0 Residual dust can create unevenness in your new finish, and keep the paint and primer from adhering to the surface properly. I vacuumed the dust from the crevices and used a lightly dampened rag to wipe the shelves and frame.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9006 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Wipe-downn-your-bookcase-or-vacumm.jpg\" alt=\"A woman's hand wiping off and vacuuming sanding dust from furniture piece.\" width=\"514\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Wipe-downn-your-bookcase-or-vacumm.jpg 514w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Wipe-downn-your-bookcase-or-vacumm-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Step 5<\/strong>: <strong>Patch any chipped, holed, or pitted surfaces with wood filler<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIf you like uniformly spaced shelves, you call fill the holes you don&#8217;t plan on using. I opted to leave the extra holes above and below each shelf in case I wanted to shift things slightly to accommodate taller or shorter items.<br \/>\n<strong>Step 6: Paint a coat of primer on the bookcase and shelves<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThis will hide imperfections and provide a surface for the paint to adhere to. Allow the primer to dry for at least three hours before you begin painting the furniture piece<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8998 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Paint-a-coat-of-primer.jpg\" alt=\"A bookcase with a coat of primer.\" width=\"514\" height=\"677\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Paint-a-coat-of-primer.jpg 514w, https:\/\/www.behr.com\/colorfullybehr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Paint-a-coat-of-primer-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Step 7:<\/strong> <strong>Apply a coat of paint on top the primer <\/strong>(I chose Ultra Pure White as my main color).<br \/>\nBegin painting your bookshelf- use a brush for smaller areas the roller can\u2019t get to. Allow the first coat to dry, and inspect the piece for any areas that are not completely covered by the paint. Edge it first with the paint brush then follow with your roller. Allow to dry.
