How to Stain a Chair with BEHR® Fast Drying Water-Based Wood Stain

So you’re ready to give that chair some new life. Let’s do it. We can make this chair brighten up the room using these quick-drying, water-based products.

For Best Results:

Start your interior stain project by cleaning the surface and lightly sanding the wood.

Apply BEHR® Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to prevent streaks and blotches.

  1. Person sanding a wooden chair with a sanding block

    Step 1

To prep the surface, sand the wood evenly with a sanding block and 220 grit sandpaper. Then, wipe away the dust with a lint-free cloth.

  2. Person applying pre-stain wood conditioner to a wooden chair

    Step 2

Apply BEHR® Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner and let it penetrate the wood for 20 minutes.

  3. Person applying stain to a wooden chair

    Step 3

Apply BEHR® Fast Drying Water-Based Wood Stain, working the stain into the grain. Give the stain 3-5 minutes to penetrate.

  4. Person using a lint-free cloth to wipe excess stain off chair

    Step 4

Use a lint-free cloth to remove any excess stain, and to blend any light and dark areas. Let the stain dry for one hour. For darker color, repeat the previous steps.

  5. Person using a paint brush to apply polyurethane to chair

    Step 5

Brush on two coats of BEHR® Fast Drying Water-Based Polyurethane. Lightly sand between coats with 220 grit sandpaper.
