PreparationBlank space if empty.

The following steps and products are recommended for best results.

  • All surfaces must be clean, sound, dry and free of any dirt, oil, and grease before application.
  • Wood Surfaces: Replace rotting or unstable boards and remove loose splinters. Remove mildew stains, dirt, oil and grease with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner prior to application.
  • Use a product such as BEHR PREMIUM NO. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper (must be followed by NO. 63) to remove all loose wood fibers, peeling paint/stain or deteriorated coatings prior to application of DeckOver.
  • On new wood, use NO. 63 to remove mill glaze and open the pores of the wood. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before coating.
  • Concrete Surfaces: Avoid areas that are structurally weak or subject to hydrostatic pressure above 8 psi. Allow new surfaces to cure for 30 days.
  • Use a stripper product to strip peeling coating.
  • Use an etcher product to clean and etch uncoated concrete or NO. 990 Concrete & Masonry Degreaser & Cleaner on sound coated surfaces prior to coating.
ApplicationBlank space if empty.
  • Use product when air and surface temperatures are between 50-90˚ F (10-32˚ C).
  • During application, avoid exposure of container to direct sunlight. Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours.
  • Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity.
  • Stir product occasionally throughout application. DO NOT THIN PRODUCT.
  • For nail holes and cracks up to 1/4", completely fill in with DeckOver coating using a nylon/polyester brush and allow to dry prior to rolling. Deep nail holes and cracks may require additional filling.
  • For edges, corners and in between wood boards, apply using a nylon/polyester brush. Use pressure while rolling and apply a generous, even coat using a 1/4-1/2" nap roller. For a smoother texture, use a brush or thinner nap roller (i.e. 1/4").
  • For vertical surfaces such as railings, use a nylon/polyester brush or roller and apply two thin coats at a spread rate of 400 sq. ft. per gallon.
  • Airless spray is recommended for experienced applicators only; use a .027" - .035" tip with no mesh filter at 2400-3200psi.
  • When spraying vertical surfaces, apply a very thin coat (one pass only) and do not back brush/roll.
  • When spraying horizontal surfaces, follow the standard spread rate of 75 sq. ft. per gallon.
  • For optimum performance, film uniformity, leveling and to cover cracks, a second coat MUST be applied.
  • Maintain a wet edge when applying.
Dry TimeBlank space if empty.
  • 4-6 hours before recoat. Dries to touch in 4 hours.
  • Wait 24-48 hours before light foot traffic. 72 hours to full cure.
  • Additional dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity.
  • Premature heavy traffic will cause coating failure.
DisposalBlank space if empty.
  • For disposal of empty containers and unused product, contact your household refuse collection service.

BEHR PREMIUM ADVANCED DECKOVER® is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 209.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product This is just one coat as we have not had more than 3 consecutive days rain free. Very pleased with how it turned out. However, I used a brush to get the best coverage. Will try the roller with the second coat. Thank you for helping me revitalize my deck.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Paint Bubbling/Peeling I scraped and sanded my stairs then cleaned them to make sure there was no residue of anything. I let dry for a solid week before applying my first coat. Went on easy for a thick product. Applied the second coat the next week with little to no traffic on painted surface to allow for a good dry surface. Applied the second coat and within a couple of weeks bubbling began to appear on both the horizontal and vertical surfaces. It's just a matter of time before the bubbling will tear and begin to peel off. Attempting to call Behr but customer service is only available between 6am - 3pm weekdays. I'm attempting to find time during my work to call.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I use this all the time I have used this on my deck and concrete, its the best paint, the adhesion is excellent, the waterproof feature is perfect, it has kept my deck looking new for years,i even painted it on top of concrete that had carpet glue on it and it adhered, used it on bare concrete and it worked, it has a beautiful pearl shine to it, and it feels so nice walking on it bare foot, I highly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PROPER PREPARATION is critical If you do not follow the proper guidelines for installing this product, do not attempt a DIY and then claim the product does not work. 95% of the failures is because the surface is not properly prepared. I have used this product and its earlier version on several docks/decks and NO peeling or complaints from the homeowner. Once properly installed, it saves thousands of dollars in replacing splintered pressure treated deck planks. With two coats, the surface looks like a composite deck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prime first When using deck over on your wood deck if you want it to last and bond great first oil base prime deck. Because deck over is not a stain its like a rubbery paint. If you oil base prime (kilz) it will be very durable

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible to apply, waste of money This was the worst paint I have EVER worked with. It's so thick that it does not spread and applying with a roller leaves a very rough surface. I had to apply with hand brush and a sponge pad, even then the paint would not fill small cracks and the second coat does not look any better than the first. It’s taking days to apply, and I’m on my 3rd can for a small sized deck. Doesn't go on smooth and didn't want to stick to certain areas. I cannot stress enough was a waste of money this product is or how awful it is to apply.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but inconsistent My deck was constructed in 2009 and I initially used another Behr product to stain it and to maintain it after. When it was time for a re-do in 2016 I used Behr DeckOver. It lasted 4 years before needing a total redo. I did it in September 2020 after replacing several rotted boards. It is essential to meticulously follow the preparation instructions before applying this product or it will fail miserably. I purchased two 5 gallon buckets of DeckOver. The first was perfect in consistency. The second was defective and virtually unusable. It was too thick and even using a professional mixer attachment on my drill it was impossible to break up clumps in the bucket. I returned it to Home Depot for a replacement which was perfect. I would also note that DeckOver does not fill in nail holes and cracks as claimed. Even with proper preparation and the application of two coats I still have visible nail holes and cracks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible This was the worst "paint" I have ever purchased to paint a deck with. It's so thick and nearly impossible to work with. It will not stick to a half inch roller nap as it recommends. Ended up having to hand brush everything on. Took forever and used 4 cans and barley got one coat on a medium sized deck. Doesn't go on smooth and didn't want to stick to certain areas. Not worth the time and money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not hold up We painted our deck last May with deck over. It looked awesome at first but the first hard rains it started to peel everywhere and the Texas sun makes it bubble. Do not buy this for patios or Decks. It’s expensive, extremely hard to spread and doesn’t last a year. I wish I would have read these reviews before purchasing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 Coats?? I have a pretty small deck/porch that can't possible be more than 75sq feet and I am not even going to get a full first coat out of it. I did all the railings, etc. first and now have less than 1/4 of the can left before rolling the flat surface. I'm sure the roller sponge will soak up the remainder in the first couple rolls and I will have to go back to get more to finish the job. The paint is incredibly thick which provides great coverage but doesn't really allow it to spread as far as promised. I'm also pretty disappointed that it doesn't come in quart size. Now I will have to buy another whole gallon just to finish the first coat and will probably only get a partial 2nd coat on.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Ok This product was a hassle and a half. The prep stages were tedious and did not work. The wood stripper was absolutely useless. We had to go out and get more bottles, and barely any of the previous finish pulled up. I had more luck with a paint scraper and a wet vac. After this product, you are supposed to use the wood cleaner. That was decent - but honestly it is a soap-based product, so don't waste your money. Then came the actual application of the DeckOver paint. For time reference, the product was applied in May 2019. I wanted a smooth finish, so we opted to do the application with a paint brush. Downside? It takes time. Upside - I absolutely know I did it right. I got the product in every crack and crevice, between each board, fully applied to the end of every board, and around to the underside. Like I said, I know I did this right. Then, a few months later I notice a few edges peeling and it does not look quite as good. Now, I have small sections of boards that have no paint on them at all, areas between the boards are peeling, and there is a strange white residue on the boards that I can not remove with a soap solution and patio brush. I remember somewhere that there was a mention that the product was supposed to last ten years - this just barely crossed the one-year mark. I wanted to like this product - I truly did. The areas where the paint is still good - it feels great to walk on it. Smooth and exactly what I wanted the deck to feel like. However, the areas that are questionable, well they are just that. Do I feel that the product is still protecting the wood deck? For the most part, yes - the obvious exceptions are where the paint has peeled away and the boards are exposed. Do I need to do touch ups to a product that took me 4+ days to apply from start to finish? Unfortunately, yes.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Such a big letdown I have used Behr paint and stain for years and trust Behr products, but Deckover was and is a terrible product. I did a phenomenal amount of research on Deckover because the original product was rated so poorly rated. I even called Behr to dis cuss my concerns reservations. This newer product was supposed to be a revised and improved version but it is not. Initially it looked really great, there is a lot of prep and it is very labor intense. I thought it would be worth it. After last fall and over the winter, in the spring spots popped off in pieces where there isn't even foot traffic. And last winter was a mild Pacific Northwest winter. This product is NOT worth the cost and labor.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Blisters galore I have tried repeatedly to get this product to work. Sanded blisters and repainted following directions but keep getting blisters. Now I have sanded down to bare wood and cleaned with behr all-in-one cleaner and thinking of putting down a primer before repainting. I know it claims not to need primer but if there is a chance it will help I want to do that. Will primer help? If so what primer?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Buy I bought this product in 2019, it looked great after putting it on my deck. However, this year it is all pealing off. I need to power wash it all off and find a better product. Will never use this again. Such a big waste of money!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible product!! we bought over 12 gallons of this paint. well I wouldn't even call it paint. I have over 1800 square feet of deck and fence. It works great on the fence but the deck is whole other story. After a year I have strips of paint, LARGE strips coming up and massive amounts of bubbling. I have boards I have to replace due to the damage this paint has cause. It will crack then the moisture runs under it and rots the wood. I am so disappointed in this product. Now I have to spend time scrapping up the damage letting it dry, replace the damage wood and repaint. Not how I want to spend my extra time. No wonder they only warranty it for a year. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Painful application This stuff is like painting with creamy peanut butter. The application roller that is designed to create the texture and help fill cracks works fine but unfortunately it also seems to pull product OFF of some of the smooth surfaces. I’m hoping the second coat I will use regular nap roller hopefully for better results. Wishing I had just spent little more time sanding and bought a deck stain/paint rather than this difficult product. If I had time I’d stand in isle at Home Depot and share my experience with those looking at it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Like paint with plaster, except plaster sticks! Such a poor paint to apply. Opened can and thought a good stirring was needed. Nope. Can’t even call it paint! Doesn’t flow. Won’t pick up on roller. Tried applying w putty knife and brush. Poor. This stuff should be pulled off shelf and rethought. It needs to be about 30% thinner to apply to surfaces. Hate it!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from My Deck We worked very hard preparing our deck. It took us 2 days to paint the deck. After painting the deck we left it alone for a week. We didn’t even walk on it, we had no rain. Six days later it rained and some of the deck boards, the paint bubbled. So upset. Hours and hours gone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Epic Failure This product was up sold to us, we though it was a revised and improved version but sadly it is not. Initially it looked really good, there is a lot of prep and it is very labor intense. We thought it would be worth it. After just one fall and over winter in the spring it has popped off in large pieces and any cracks we filled the product has either sunk in that area, lifted off completely and those cracked areas are even worse and lifting, On a fence it's worth it, but flat areas with foot traffic and the elements, rain, snow, sun, its not worth the cost and labor.
Date published: 2020-06-22
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful texture and finish look I applied this to our deck after carefully washing it. The application process is very demanding and the results are very disappointing. It’s like applying clay that dries up too fast. It does a good job covering cracks/holes however if I don’t look carefully, any day drips will become hard.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible to paint I got this paint in middle of May 2020, from Home Depot. I had so much going on. I went this week to paint some fencing & boards to build a deck. It was so thick I couldn't even mix it to paint. Then when got some mix it so clumping & hard to even try to paint. Know I am out the money got figure something else out to use...It so thick it's like rubber..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage I wasn’t sure this would work but it’s perfect! My front porch is about 15 years old and in the sun almost all day, after a good cleaning this stuff worked great! It’s like new, the cracks are filled. Getting more for the new back deck!
