Where to Use

Exterior latex, oil-based and 100% acrylic coatings on Wood Decks, Porches & Patios, Siding, Fences, Shakes and Shingles.

Usage Summary
  • Removes loose wood fibers without sanding. Not for interior use or on aluminum surfaces. May harm bare metal or painted surfaces.
  • Be sure to have a source for water, hose with nozzle and stiff bristle broom or brush and a product such as BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner.
  • DO NOT THIN PRODUCT. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces. Dampen nearby foliage with water and cover with plastic drop cloths.
  • Wear protective clothing, goggles, acid resistant gloves, and NIOSH approved Respirator
  • Conduct a small test patch in an inconspicuous area to ensure product performance.
  • Prevent all rinse solution from entering storm drains.
  • Must apply between 40-90˚F (4.5-32˚C). Pour BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper directly onto surface and apply liberally using a nylon/poly brush or roller. Natural bristle brushes or lambs wool applicators are not recommended.
  • Due to product thickness, DO NOT use pump, paint or other sprayers. Product will clog tip, resulting in leaking and dripping.
  • Always keep surface wet by misting with water and re-apply NO. 64 if drying occurs. Finish will begin to lift from the surface. Repeat process as needed to keep the surface wet during the removal period. Most deteriorated finishes will start to lift after about 5-45 minutes. The coating should easily rinse off when ready.
  • When the finish starts to lift, scrub the surface using a stiff bristle broom or brush. Rinse thoroughly with water from garden hose using nozzle at normal pressure, or use a pressure washer at a low setting (500-1200 PSI). DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE as this may harm the wood.
  • If some of the old finish remains on the surface, repeat application procedure or spot sand as needed.
  • Follow up with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner to remove stains, rejuvenate natural wood color and to neutralize the stripping action.

Dry Time
  • Surfaces must be thoroughly dry before applying any type of new finish, except those finishes that can be applied to dampened wood. Allow the wood to dry for a minimum of 24 hours in warm, dry weather.
  • Biodegradable. Properly dispose of all soiled rags. To recycle or properly dispose of paint in your community, contact your household refuse collection service. PROTECT FROM FREEZING.

BEHR PREMIUM® Wood Stain & Finish Stripper is rated 1.8 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Complete waste of money and time Bought three containers of this product to clean my deck. Had already used a drum sander to remove the majority of old stain on my deck. There were areas that are not reachable with the drum sander so I used this product thinking it would remove the stain that was left after sanding. Well , after hour of application and waiting for this product to work , it was complete torture realizing that the stain hadn’t softened or lifted from the wood. I used a pressure washer afterward and still the stain was tough to remove. Save your money , this product is a complete failure and waste of money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nasty Stuff with Below Bar Performance After applying a Behr transparent deck finish to our new deck 2 years ago with a reapplication last year, we realized was subpar and began to peel within 3 months of application. We finally decided to use Behr Wood Stain & Finish Stripper to strip the deck and start over with an oil based deck finish. There is nothing about this product that is easy and even with considerable hard work the effectiveness is way suspect. We applied the product according to instructions and left it on for 30+ minutes. We then had to brush aggressively several times during the rinsing process to get about 70-75% of the old finish to budge. We also used a plastic paint scrapper to try to remove the stubborn spots, still with less than satisfactory success. Following complete rinsing of the nasty, toxic stripper, we rented a drum sander to remove the numerous old finish spots on the deck. This was followed by sanding under our metal deck railing with a orbital sander and good ole elbow grease hand sanding. The final step was applying the Behr Premium All-In-One Wood Cleaner (another nasty, toxic product) that appeared to work satisfactorily. So after 3 long days of removing the existing finish and preparing the deck, we were finally ready for applying a new coat of transparent oil-based deck finish (not a Behr product this time!). The moral of this drawn out story is that we should have just rented the drum sander in the first place and forgotten about using the stripper and wasting our valuable time and effort! Never More!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked great!! I used this product to strip my 25 year old deck that had been painted by some previous renters. It was very worn and stained by years of neglect. The product ( with a little work) stripped it sown to the original boards!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not agood product Tried this product on my deck with the intent of removing 12 year old acrylic sealer. Bottom line is that it will work but it did a poor job desolving the old acrylic. It works slowly, is labor intensive and expensive. Had much better luck with household bleach and a presure washer. Acrylic sealers are good sealers but they are hard to remove. My guess is that there is no chemical available to the public that efficiently desolves acrylics. Resealing wood decks will remain a difficult job until this problem is solved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Time saver I started out trying to sand off all my old stain and sealer on the deck. I came across this product which was recommended by my Home Depot paint department guy. This saved me a lot of back breaking time to use. Applications was good and rinse off was a breeze. I’d recommend this to others that have to remove and repaint there deck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The secret is how wet and how long! I too was skeptical after reading reviews about this product and because previous experience with similar products has confirmed that these things just don't work as expected. However, I was more than delighted at the results after I worked with the Stripper for a short time. I realized that the secret was wetting the deck, applying the stripper, waiting for it to turn "white" and then rewetting, not misting, wetting! It seems to work its best when allowed to sit with a very wet surface. And also by applying with a roller which spread it evenly and not too thin, not too thick. Also saved time! Yes there were a few small areas that needed a second treatment, but it literally power washed off. My results were very satisfying, I was removing two applications of deck stain, that were applied over a ten year period on a 30 year old deck. It actually did what it said it would do and I would certainly recommend it to others.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed This weekend I bought Qty (4) 1 gallon BEHR PREMIUM® Wood Stain & Finish Stripper. The temperature was about 70 degree. I soaked the old Behr stain for about 30 mins keeping it moist with mist. It removed the old stain that was already peeling off in the high traffic areas, but the other areas it did not remove. I used a scrubbing brush and power washer and the stripper did not seem to affect the stain., Now I have less than 50% of the deck stripped. Concerned about adding the new Behr stain without old stain removed. Very disappointed! The deck is only a total of 463 sq/ft. I gal container should be good for 150 Sq/FT. Qty of 4 should cover 600 Sq/Ft. This should be more than enough

Rated 2 out of 5 by from wespaint I spoke to a Home Depot associate and with the local Behr rep about my plans to strip a Behr waterbase seal from my deck and use a Behr oilbase coating. Both recommended my plans. I discussed using the Behr Premium wood stain and finish stripper. Unfortunately, neither of them gave me any information on how difficult my task would be. Following directions on the stripper as a guide, I poured the stripper into a paint roller tray, used a brush to dip and heavily coat my deck. Waited the recommended 45 minutes, keeping the deck moist with a misty spray. I'm now on my 3rd day of stripping. On the second day, I read the on-line reviews from former customers. The main thought I reached at that time was that I should be using 1 gallon of stripper for every 50 square feet of decking. My deck is less that 200 sq. feet, and I had used a little over 1 gallon on the first day. I have used 2 gallons more on the 2nd and 3rd day. Fortunately, I have access to a power washer as very little of the paint is removed with a stiff brush. I'll finish tomorrow and will need to sand many sections of my deck due to damage from the high pressure water used to remove the "loosened" paint. I have already purchased the cleaner and the oilbase stain.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product - but you have to wait! My husband and I are using this product on our pool deck. The deck is 14 X 25 and then 3 foot walkway around the pool. We had power washed the deck before and it only took off the loose parts and left the wood with an uneven surface. The first day we poured this product on and tried scrubbing after only 5 or 10 minutes and then waited about 10 minutes longer and then power washed it off... it worked for most but not the parts that hadn't been in the sun or traffic. The next day, I slowed down... (while my husband reset screws in the part we had already done, I spread the stripper with a brush making sure all the wood looked wet with the product. I timed it and didn't touch it for 15 minutes -misting it with the hose when the wood started looking dry. After 15 minutes, I brushed the boards with the grain and the stain lifted up. I waited another 10 minutes keeping the boards misted. I then used my power washer with a Ryobi surface cleaner attachment ($25.). This contained the mess around the pool as the sprayer heads are under a cover. The rest of the sludge just rinsed off. This product needs time to work and elbow grease or power washer help. I am a 64 year old woman. I cleaned this on very hot days - above 85 degrees. I would recommend you wait for cooler days. I would have given the product 5 stars but this does take effort!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed Trying to remove prior weather worn BEHR Stain from my deck and why did I not read the reviews prior to purchase I truly should have the reviews they are accurate of it not working and a lot of wasted time and effort sadly Very Disappointed, to say the least, and still a huge project on my hands and I am now out the money for since I wasted it on this product that was highly recommended by the home depot sales guy that told me he took the course and was going to use it for his own deck project

Rated 1 out of 5 by from wasted time/Money I almost always check reviews before using a product, and sure wish I had for this. Finally checked after this did virtually nothing to remove the finish our power washer missed and wanted to see if I was using correctly. So I see it wasn't my application, but rather the product. Ugh- so much wasted time. I did gain a handful of blisters from scrubbing though.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WASTE of TIME I applied this product 3 times to my wooden deck bench to remove old paint/stain to prep for Behr deckover application. I reread the instructions, making sure I was following them exactly. Between the length of time & number of applications to get any result, using this product takes FAR more time than sanding, which I have now resorted to. I believe the old finish loosening up at all was more a result of the wood being completely wet with water, thus softening it, rather than the stripper. Plus the amount of scrubbing you have to do is exhausting & I was using a very stiff brush. I also had to use a scraper along with the brush. I am requesting a refund as I do not believe this product at all performs as described & have the receipt if necessary. I just hope the wood cleaner & the "Deckover" paint works MUCH better than the stripper!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Regretful and tired I wish I would have read these reviews before I started using this item. I have blisters on my hands from scrubbing. I have been trying to get my stain off my patio two weeks in and am on my second container of the stripper.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed After being very satisfied with Behr's other products, this one was a total disappointment. I pressure washed my deck first to remove the already flaking sections of old paint, then waited for a cool, overcast day to apply the stripper so it wouldn't dry out. I let it sit for about an hour (yes, it stayed damp the entire time) and then hit it with the scrub brush. Not one flake of paint moved. A second application did not help at all. After paying a premium price, I would have expected a premium product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the best from Behr, but they made it right! I wrote a review of this product on Home Depot's website and voiced my displeasure with this product. To my surprise I was contacted directly by Behr who went above and beyond to resolve the issue. Although I will not recommend this specific product, I have had no other problems with Behr products and will continue to use the paints and stains. I am beyond impressed with Behr's commitment to customer satisfaction.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time and money Applied this junk twice on my large deck. it didn't do a thing to remove my old Behr Wood Stain. I wouldn't suggest this product to my worst enemy. WHAT A WASTE DON'T BUT THIS JUNK. DON'T DO IT!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from wasted time Disappointed in this product, it was not cheap and did not do what it states. Currently sanding the deck to remove finish should have save the money from this product for beer. Prouct is also very slippery and hard to power wash off. disappoint since i like and use Behr paints. Skip this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from very disappointed I applied this as the instructions said with a deck brush and my deck paint stayed on. I reapplied and it still stayed on. Total waste of money. I am now borrowing the neighbors pressure washer which is what I should have done in the first place.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY I have a 10x10 and an 18x22 foot wood deck. Instead of winging it, I bought Behr Wood Stain and Finish Stripper at my local store. I read the directions 3 times to make sure I didn't miss anything. I had thoroughly cleaned my decks. I followed the directions specifically and had all the right supplies. HOURS later after scrubbing and then rinsing and rinsing and there were bubbles and bubbles, I stopped using the pressure washer as the instructions had indicated and went with just the garden hose. I was rinsing for hours and my deck doesn't look any different. I will be requesting a FULL REFUND. Now, I am wondering if I waste my time with the Wood Cleaner or should I just return all the containers and quit. DISAPPOINTED. Sure wish I had read the reviews BEFORE starting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORKS GREAT! Just follow the directions! I don't understand how this has gotten so many low reviews. I used it today and it was PERFECT! We needed to remove semi-transparent stain from our cedar deck railings and spindles. Bought this product along with a small 3 inch roller to apply. Before applying I MISTED the deck with water - just lightly misted, not soaked. Shook product very well and poured into a small paint pan. Wearing gloves and working in small sections of the railings, I rolled this product generously onto the deck rails and spindles and let it sit for at least 10-15 minutes after done applying. Then I used a small work broom with stiff bristles to lightly rub the rails and the stain started coming off in a gloppy mess. Using just a hose on "stream" setting, I sprayed off the product along with all the stain. It literally just washed off the wood. Rinsed until water was clear. Other reviewers must not be doing something right, because this was so EASY and IT REALLY WORKED!! The hardest part is just make sure you don't get it on your skin, but if you are careful then that isn't a problem. Will be using the Behr deck cleaner on it tomorrow to make it really clean and will be ready to stain after that. Definitely works - check out before and after photos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Went to Home Depot and received advise from a sales clerk regarding the application of this product. 5 containers later and after contacting Behr did the product work. I was misinformed by the clerk and learned the hard : expensive way. I had a sun baked stain on my deck and pergola that needed stripping. Once I followed the Behr's recommendation it worked well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stained me deck orange!! I needed something to use to strip stain off my deck. Behr usually has quality products so I thought I'd give this a try. Wow! What a disappointment. I followed instructions to a "T" and it turned my deck orange in some places!! It seems like whenever I put the stripper on the deck, it stained it orange!!! I really hope it isn't stained orange forever! I'm gonna clean the deck with another product/brand to clean all the algae green mold off and I hope it comes off then!! If not I'll be quite upset with Behr especially since I followed instructions!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I should have read the reviews first! I have two coats of Behr deck stain on my 5 year old deck and decided that I wanted to strip it and start over again. I have a dog whose claws put marks in the finish as he takes off running. So, Behrs deck stain? Why not use Behrs Deck Stripper? Two applications later and two hours of wasted time and a borrowed power washer tell me that I should have read the reviews first. This product is marginally better than water. Save your money!!!!!!!!!!! It might be Premium in their eyes but it is sub-standard in mine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Very Effective I applied this in 60 degree weather. I followed the directions (re-misted periodically to keep it wet, kept scrubbing) and, after 45 minutes, very little stain had come up. I am going to try again today with the rest of the product I have, then switch to another product and remember to never buy this again. I will say that No. 63 works pretty well, though.
