Preparation
Proper surface preparation is required
- All surfaces must be clean, dry, free of rust, dust, dirt, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold and mildew stains, loose and peeling paint and all other foreign substances.
- Mildew: Remove mildew stains with a mildew stain removing product.
- UNPAINTED METAL SURFACES: Ferrous Metals: Use SSPC-SP2. Remove all rust and mill scale using sandpaper, steel wool, abrasive blasting, or other abrading methods to create a profile on the metal’s surface.
- Remove any residue, and clean the metal by scrubbing the surface with a solvent such as mineral spirits or acetone. Bare metal must be coated the same day it is cleaned.
- Galvanized Metal, Aluminum & Other Non Ferrous Metals: Use SSPC-SP1. All oil film on new metal must be removed before it is painted.
- Remove oil film with a solvent such as mineral spirits or acetone and remove any residue.
- Sand the surface with sandpaper, steel wool, or by using a chemical etcher such as BEHR PREMIUM® Concrete & Masonry Cleaner & Etcher No. 991.
- Clean by scrubbing the surface with a solvent such as mineral spirits or acetone and remove any residue.
- PREVIOUSLY PAINTED METAL SURFACES: Remove all loose and peeling paint and all other foreign substances.
- Clean any dirt and grease by scrubbing the surface with a solvent such as mineral spirits or acetone and remove any residue.
- Sufficiently sand and dull all smooth, hard, dense or glossy surfaces before coating for maximum performance.
- It is recommended to test a small inconspicuous area for adhesion one week prior to application. If test area shows insufficient adhesion, additional abrasion or complete removal of the previous coating may be required.
- All exterior alkyd surfaces should be primed prior to painting.
Prime
- UNPAINTED METAL SURFACES: Ferrous Metals: Self priming on properly prepared substrates.
- For best results, use a MPI #107 certified rust-inhibitive, water based primer, such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer No. 436.
- To properly prepare the uncoated surface, please refer to the surface preparation instructions.
- Galvanized Metal, Aluminum & Other Non Ferrous Metals: Use a MPI #134 certified water based primer for galvanized surfaces, such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer No. 436.
- To properly prepare the uncoated surface, please refer to the surface preparation instructions.
- PREVIOUSLY PAINTED METAL & GLOSSY SURFACES: Self priming on properly prepared substrates.
- Use a MPI #134 certified water based primer for galvanized surfaces, such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer No. 436.
- To properly prepare the uncoated surface, please refer to the surface preparation instructions.
