Excellent old time oil based

I’m very old school when it comes to painting my buildings. Sure, latex has its positives with ease of cleanup. However, this oil based lasts so much longer and is much more durable. Not carried much in stores and had to drive 60 miles to find the quantity I need, but it was well worth it! Thanks for keeping and producing this product. Keep the oil based that requires cleanup with mineral spirits and you will have me as a Customer for life!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great oil based paint

This morning I paint 2 items with this paint my cast iron doorbell American flag and a metal garden American flag on the White stripes and stars. First of all it does not smell as much as too many chemicals like other oil-based paints and it's very good and shiny for being semi gloss. So far I have painted the red and blue with other oil-based paint this time I use the Behr brand.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Been a day and this crap still isn’t dry. Hopefully it actually does dry, otherwise I get to scrap it off. Super sticky.

Hi SinNombre,

Thank you for reviewing Behr Oil-Base Semi-Gloss Paint. I'm very sorry to hear that the paint still feels sticky after a 24-hour dry time. I understand how disappointing this must be, and I want to help.

The paint usually dries to the touch after about four hours, so it's concerning to hear that wasn't the case with your experience. Additional dry time and increasing ventilation should help the paint dry to a hard finish.

If after seven days the paint still feels tacky, I recommend gently wiping it with mineral spirits, as this can help remove the tacky top layer. A thin coat can be applied if color uniformity needs to be achieved again.

I've emailed you directly to follow-up and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Kindest regards,

Doris

Takes forever to fully dry

This is probably the worst paint I've ever worked with. I've used several Behr products in the past with no issues. I used this paint on my garage man door - painted a think coat in 65 degree weather 30 hours ago and the paint is still tacky and cracking in some spots. I still can't shut my door because it sticks to the weatherstipping. Threw this paint away and purchased the Behr urethane alkyd enamel - much better paint.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Still tacky on day three

I used the right primer, and did everything I was supposed to do. This paint is still tacky. I had it mixed properly that morning at Home Depot, where I bought it as recommended for painting a greenhouse due to the paint's antimicrobial qualities. It isn't going to be very clean when everything starts sticking to this paint, is it--when every leaf and dust particle cling to it like flypaper. This is not antimicrobial in the least--it's a microbe catcher.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi tcg72, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry the paint is still tacky after 3 days. I recommend allowing the coating to dry for at least 7 days, as the coating should be fully cured and dry to a hard finish after 7 days. If it is still slightly tacky, I recommend gently wiping the surface with mineral spirits to try removing the tackiness and continue letting the surface dry. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. I'll reach out to you directly to assist you with this further. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us, and I hope to hear from you soon! -Joni

Nice finish

I purchased this paint to refinish my cupboards, but have also used it for a table/chair refinish and coffee bar refinish. The table was completed over a year ago and is holding up beautifully. The chairs do have some nicks where they hit the table edge when pushed in, but overall the paint has held up well. It is easy to clean and does not stain. Overall I am very pleased with the results.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Absolutely horrible

Professional painter here. I usually use Rustoleum oil based paints or Sherwin Williams. I was in an area to do a job and ran out of my usual paints and my only option was a Home Depot with this Behr “paint” (and I use that term loosely as to not offend other paint manufacturers). This paint is horrible. The smell is 10 times worse than any oil paint I have ever used. It literally will burn your eyes like you’ve been swimming in a pool that is over chlorinated. It’s also extremely runny and hard to control because it’s so thin. And I’m on day 6 and the homeowner I did the job for says it’s still not dry. Now I have to spend huge amounts of money to remove this crap paint and do the job all over again with proper paint. Only saving grace is because it has never dried I never got to put a second coat on. Thanks for ruining this job and my reputation with my customer. If you can’t make a proper oil based paint then don’t offer one.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi Dscmills,

Thank you for sharing your experience with Behr Oil-Based Paint. I'm incredibly sorry to hear about the odor, consistency, and dry time issues you and your customer had with our paint. That's definitely not what we want our customers to go through. I'm sure this must be very disappointing and frustrating, and I want to do my best to help.

As you probably already know, the paint can be removed with a conventional paint stripper. You can also try wiping a small area of the surface with mineral spirits, which can help remove the tacky top layer.

I emailed you directly to follow up, and I look forward to assisting you.

Kindest regards,

Doris

Years of excellent results

I have used the satin and semi-gloss versions of this enamel for years. I tried different brands, but was disappointed. I remodeled the kitchen and added Penetrol to the paint to reduce brush/roller marks. Everyone thinks I sprayed the cabinets. I have thinned and sprayed other projects with excellent results. The paint has proven to be bulletproof. I don't understand the many reviews of slow drying. Never a problem. I am building a bathroom vanity and am painting it with Mega Blue satin. Painted it in the afternoon and installed the next morning. I live in central Texas where we receive humid gulf stream breezes nearly year long, but still no drying issues.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Worried

Our handy man bought this paint instead of my normal choice of Behr low-order Paint & Primer. It’s been over a week and the 2 cabinets he painted, even with keeping the fan on and windows open for 24hrs/day, I can still smell the paint. I’m pregnant and I have a 19 month old. This paint is a nightmare to dry and the smell remains after 6 days. Don’t purchase this unless you are using it outside your home. Should be illegal to use inside a home.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi, thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear the oil-based that was used on your cabinets has a strong lingering odor. To get your project back on track, we'd recommend increasing the ventilation in the space and allowing the product more time to fully cure. Keep in mind that oil-based coatings will have a stronger odor than water-based products. Customer satisfaction is important to us. So, we've reached out directly to you to assist you further. Hi SFH074 - Thank you for reviewing our paint. I'm sorry to hear that your project still feels tacky after 3 days of dry time. Our Oil-Base Enamel should feel dry to the touch after 4-5 hours; however, it will come to a complete cure after at least a week (darker colors may need some additional dry time as well). Super tough finish

I bought this paint to paint some wood shelves and an exterior door. I had no trouble with dry time as some others have, but it did dry up quickly (within a day or so) in the container I was holding it in between coats. I also used an older brush to apply the paint in case I had my standard issue with cleaning the oil based paint out of the brush (it went in the trash). I wish I was more successful at cleaning it from brushes, and I wish oil based paint wasn't so fragrant, because you cannot beat the durability.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Satin that drys like gloss.

This is the worst. This, product is not what worth using if you want you project to come out satin. I took all the steps from preparing my project to preparing paint to use. When, it dryed it was gloss. Went ,back to Home Depot to talk to salesperson and Behr, guy was there he was useless. Had no clue. Was, told maye a bad batch. That, didn't help me or wouldn't do anything for me. Use, at your own risk !

Hi Butch 48 - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that our semi-gloss enamel dried glossier than expected! This product should dry to a sleek, glossy finish. To fix the sheen, we recommend scuff sanding the surface, wiping the area down with a damp cloth, then recoating with our Oil-Base Satin Enamel for a flatter, pearl-like finish. Hi Conor, thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear the oil-based satin paint you used is taking longer to dry than anticipated.

Our Oil-Base Satin Enamel Paint normally dries to the touch within 4 hours. However, it can take up to 7 days or more for the paint to fully cure and bond to your surface. Keep in mind that a longer dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity or with darker colors.

To get your project back on track, we'd recommend allowing the coating to dry for the cure time, ensuring to increase the ventilation in the painted space.

Customer satisfaction is important to us. So, we've reached out to you directly to assist you further. Have a great day.

Wont dry

-Used for indoor shelving...The dry time is ridiculous...The odor is stronger than any solvent paint I've used hence, "this is not an interior Paint"....also, Behr should know this is not an exterior paint either,,,You don't use an oil-based based paint outside///!!!...Please don't confuse this with solvent, catalyst, polyester, resin etc.. -Avoid using these experimental products. If you require a solvent base, stick to the Sherwin or Ben...with solvent experience,,,!

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi aGardner - Thank you for reviewing our Oil-Base Enamel. I'm sorry to hear that the paint doesn't seem to be drying on your indoor shelving and the odor is very strong. I recommend increasing the airflow around your shelving by setting up large fans and opening up windows and doors which will help speed up the drying process and push the odor out as well. If the paint still feels tacky after a few more days of dry time, the tackiness can be removed by wiping the surface down with mineral spirits. I've also reached out to you via email to assist you with this further. Thank you again for your review, and I look forward to hearing from you. - Sara

Slow dry and stinky - but great finish once dry

The can says 4-6 hours dry and 24 hours recoat, it drys a lot slower than that and it will outgas for for 24+ hours stinking up your house (72 degrees with airflow). Once cured it is great. I have been applying enamels for 20+ years and this is the slowest curing enamel I have ever used, I think they overload it with pigment for coverage.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Disappointed

Used to paint front door. Let dry for 3 days there were wrinkles in the pain. Sanded out the wrinkles, paint still a little tacky, and put in a second coat. The paint wrinkled again. I really don’t want to have to strip this and start over. What to do to get wrinkles out without having to start over.

Hi Edieprice03,

Thank you for sharing your experience with BEHR® Oil-Base Semi-Gloss Enamel and including pictures of your door. I'm very sorry to hear that the paint wrinkled twice. That's abnormal and not something we want our customers to go through.

As you know, the wrinkles should be sanded down before touching up and recoating. Oil-based paint takes a longer time to dry, especially when tinted to deep colors. If exposed to extremely hot or cool damp weather, the paint film can dry faster on top than underneath, leading to wrinkles. I recommend touching up with BEHR Urethane Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel because it has a faster dry time, dries to a hard finish, and should also match the paint currently applied.

I emailed you directly and look forward to assisting you.

Kindest regards,

Doris

Does not dry!

Went to homedepot and asked for paint for a crib after (talking to an outside expert for recommendations he said use oil based paint of this brand) and the homedepot employee was clueless as what to recommend. I bought this thinking paint is paint and oil based will stick better (lead free) and my baby will not be able to scratch or chew this paint off her crib. This paint has not dried after 3 days. It easily scratches off and the smell in my house is horrible!!!! Even with the door closed in the baby’s room (where she can not sleep now) the smell sneaks all over the house. My windows have been open and fans blowing and no luck.

The crib can be gently wiped with mineral spirits to help remove the tacky top layer. In the worst-case scenario, the paint will need to be removed before recoating.
