Bad product

I have Behr stain on my whole house and out buildings and I find it great. On the other hand I bought the deckover and it bubbled after the first season. I used all of the deck wash etc and it didn't work I then reworked it hoping for a better result and it still was terrible. I have invested a large sum of money not only in the product , but in the rework. Yes I am very dissatisfied

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi Jadeast, thanks for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear the DeckOver you used on your deck bubbled after one season.

To get your project back on track, we’d recommend removing all the bubbled and loose coating, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, allowing it to dry for at least 24 hours, and touching up the affected areas. If over 50% of the coating bubbled, we’d suggest applying two full coats after cleaning and allowing the surface to dry to reseal your wood.

Customer satisfaction is important to us. So, we’ve reached out to you directly to assist you further. We hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend.

Perfect for my needs

I used this product to paint the wood floor of our large, enclosed utility trailer in which we store and transport our ATVs. We also use it to camp in. The wood was in bad shape and bare feet often picked up splinters. Two coats and the wood deck is perfect. Does not stain and no more splinters. A great solution to my problem.

Yes, I recommend this product.

This stuff is awful. DO NOT BUY

I'm so upset, I just bought a house a few months ago and the deck was a mess, the paint was peeling. I found some positive blog posts about this stuff on Pinterest but clearly, I should have looked at the reviews. After a month of sanding, washing, and prepping my deck I was so excited to put this stuff on. Now that it's dry I'm realizing it's the same stuff I worked so hard to remove. Not only do I now know is it not going to last it's practically unusable. I used a roller as they recommended, and it's uneven and clumpy no matter how many times I roll over it, it won't spread properly. Within a few minutes, in cloudy 24Degree weather while my deck is still in the shade it's practically dried up in the rolling tray. This stuff is so wasteful, no matter what I do I can't stop it from clumping and drying. It feeling as though I'm trying to roll or brush dry sand onto the deck. I cannot believe this, I'm so upset, what a waste of time and money.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi upsetandstressed - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that this product is difficult to work with and the finish on your deck looks uneven and clumpy. To fix the finish, I recommend making sure your roller is properly loaded before rolling the coating onto the surface. It also helps to work from a larger bucket with a grid attachment so you're able to get enough product on the roller. I've also reached out to you via email to make sure you're project is taken care of. Thanks again for submitted a review, and I hope to hear back from you. - Sara

Too thick to use a roller or brush

Bought this two weeks ago, just went to apply. Mixed well with a drill or so I thought. Couldn't roll or brush on. Had to go get trowels to apply and then use the roller to texture it. Leads to a very uneven coat and one can barely covered 36 square feet. The job is started now and I don't know if the other 3 cans will be enough. Crap product. Never again.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi Bazz25 - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that this product was difficult to apply. Once Advanced DeckOver has been stirred for a few minutes before use, it should have a very thick consistency (similar to pancake batter) but still flow smoothly from the stir stick. I'm concerned that you weren't able to apply it with a brush or roller after stirring with a drill. I've reached out to you via email to learn more about the cans you purchased and assist you with this further. Thanks again for sharing this with us, and I hope to hear back from you soon. - Sara

THICK as molasses.

I had used this on a small balcony surface before this latest porch deck renewal. As one of the few stains that offers a non-slip texture, this product was the choice for me. Just know what you're getting before you proceed. This is a very THICK consistency stain, almost more of a sandy/rubber paint. I applied it on a clean, belt-sanded 20 year old deck and a new set of wood steps, using a large sash brush, after failing with a 15mm roller sleeve (just too thick and clumsy). You have to maintain a wet edge with clean brush-marks and not rework as you go (or it clumps, pulls up). Also, applying in direct sun can speed up the skin-over and clumping in the can/tray. If you're methodical AND patient, you get a nice, thick, textured coating. Used two cans on 2 coats of about 80 sq. feet, so about 20-25% the coverage of normal solid stain.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Had to remove product.

This product was WAY to thick to spread. My wife started and complained that it was very thick and difficult to spread. Instead of believing her, I told her that it is supposed to be a little thicker than paint. However, after she had painted nearly all the rails and spindles, I helped her and realized that we never should have used the product. It was the consistency of drywall mud. It wouldn't pick up on a 3/8" nap paint roller, and when it did, it wouldn't apply to the surface. A paint brush was manageable for about 5 minutes until the product filled the brush so much that the brush wouldn't apply product any longer. I returned to the store to ask if this was normal. They said yes. We opened a new can to see if it was the same consistency as the can I bought. The new can was much thinner, similar to paint. The store said that when this product is tinted, it can thicken like mine did, but it should still apply OK. They sold me one of the Behr mesh roller covers that is specialized for this project. The roller worked only marginally better then regular rollers. The best way to apply was use this roller (which makes the surface look like a very thick stamped ceiling), and then smooth it out with a brush. When the mesh roller cover didn't work, we quit using the product. However, we had to spend an entire Saturday sanding down all the spindles and railings that we had already "painted". We are going to use standard exterior paint on the rails and spindles. We are now farther behind on this project than when we started and wasted nearly $100 on this product, just to spend more time removing it. Again, Home Depot mentioned that adding tint to this product can cause it to thicken. But mine changed from thick paint to drywall mud. I would NOT recommend adding tint, but if you do, check the consistency before you leave the store.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi tmk1, thanks for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear the Advanced DeckOver you used seemed too thick and was hard to apply and remove; that's not the performance we expect from our products.

Our DeckOver coating is thicker than our other wood/concrete coatings, as it provides a textured slip-resistant finish. However, it should be spreadable. To ensure proper consistency during your application, we recommend stirring the coating for 3-5 minutes before using it, and intermittently during your application.

Bought 6 gallons of this product, plenty for our deck. Cleaned & Prepped area prior to applying. It’s been barely 3 weeks and it’s coming off. I bought this for my deck 3-4 years ago. The following year it had peeled and rotted my deck. You can see the tan color in pic of what it used to be. I called customer service and they said we need the receipt. It had been quite awhile since I purchased it and I can’t find the receipt. I’ll keep looking though yet when I do find it they’ll tell me it has been to long. I wonder why they have “advanced” deck over? Makes you wonder.

Great finish

Worked great! And looks great 1 year later. I wish the instructions recommended using the non-textured product for the first coat. The texture does limit coverage and if you’re not careful you can miss spots “below” the texture. a starter coat could prevent any misses. And adding the texture for the second coat would still look awesome.

Beauty with protection

We retired in Oregon where the weather exacts a heavy toll on unprotected exterior wood railings. We purchased Deckover after extensive preparation on our railings. I tried several different application methods. The coverage and wood adherence was excellent. I followed the directions for application and after almost two years, the railings look as good as when the Deckover was first applied. I was skeptical of the 25 year coating life, but in spite of over sixty inches of rain a year, I believe that Deckover was the best choice I could have made. Instead of an eyesore, our railings are a real asset to the exterior of our home.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Worst Product Purchased

Purchased this product three years ago on a new treated wood deck that had aged for 1 year. Followed all instructions as indicated on can. After one year of applying product it started to peel in several areas. The following year the paint was peeling badly and I decided to remove same. Tried a small sander and then a belt sander with coarse sandpaper which will take hours and hours to complete. I then tried a heat gun with a scraper and nothing worked very well. Finally tried a paint stripper recommended by the store where I purchase the product, did not work. I will probably have to take the wood decking off and replace the boards. Once winter is over I am going to try one last time to remove the product, but I doubt I will be successful. Worst product ever.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Thank for your feedback, klm123. We're sorry to hear the DeckOver coating you used on your deck peeled and that you've had a hard time removing the remaining coating.

Our DeckOver coating is thicker than other wood products, so conventional paint or stain strippers aren't strong enough to remove it. But, a power washer (at a low setting) or a floor sander can be used to remove the coating still on your surface. However, there is no need to completely remove the coating.

Aside from removing the coating completely, to get your project back on track, you can remove the peeled and loose coating, clean your surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, allow it to dry for at least 24 hours, and recoat your deck with our Advanced DeckOver which has been reformulated for improved flexibility and adhesion. If only a couple of areas are affected, we'd suggest touching up the affected areas, once you've cleaned and allowed the surface to dry, before applying a full coat to reseal your surface. If more than 50% of the coating has peeled, we would recommend applying two full new coats to ensure the surface is sealed.

Customer satisfaction is important to us. So, we've reached out to you directly to assist you further. We hope you have a great day.

Hi there - Thank you for reviewing our Advanced DeckOver Textured. I'm so sorry to hear about the foot and paw prints on your deck, and how dirt and debris are sticking to the surface. Because of the non-skid texture, this coating may hold on to dirt and debris more than a regular smooth deck stain or paint. However, the surface can be easily cleaned with soap and water or our wood cleaner. I've also reached out to you via email to make sure your project is taken care of. Hi Dana, thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear our coating peeled off your surface.

In situations like this, we recommend removing the peeled and loose coating, replacing any unstable boards, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, allowing it to dry for at least 24 hours, and touching up the affected areas. Thank you for reviewing Behr DeckOver. I'm terribly sorry to hear about the peeling issue you're having, as it certainly isn't what we want our customers to go through. I understand this must be disappointing and would love to help as best as possible.

The loose DeckOver can be removed with a floor sander/grinder. Home Depot usually has great options available. After removing the loose areas and cleaning with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner, the surface should dry for at least 24 hours in dry weather before recoating. If there are DeckOver remnants left, they can be topcoated with a water-based paint/stain.

I emailed you directly and look forward to assisting you with this matter.

I have been a big customer of Behr products for years, but this one missed the mark! The consistency is way too thick to make it easy to apply. I am modestly happy with the look and feel, but there's no way I would recommend this or buy it again unless Behr finds a way to thin it out. I can't even get a brush in between the deck boards to get the areas the roller wont get to.

Painted our deck last year,a terrible experience from start to finish.Firstly, the product is a nightmare to use.It has the consistency of pudding. It remains in the brush, does not penetrate the brush at all,so be prepared to go through a lot of brushes. My husband, a professional painter, says it is the worst paint he has ever used. After prepping, painting waiting, after two coats the deck looked decent That did not last The first good cold snap and the peeling began and did not end.We are in the process as I write of stripping our deck.Do not throw your money away, steer clear of this product.
