Previously Finished Surfaces:
- For best results, surface must be clean, dry and free of wax, grease, oil, shellac, lacquer, mildew and polishes.
- Waxes must be removed with a wax stripper, sanding does not remove wax.
- Shellac must be removed with a paint stripper.
- Previously finished floors in good condition should be cleaned with a TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) solution in water and rinsed thoroughly with clean water.
- Do not use TSP on bare wood floors as discoloring will occur.
- Some types of pre-finished factory finished flooring may not be compatible with Behr Polyurethane Floor Finish (test in an inconspicuous area for compatibility).
- Old finishes in poor condition must be removed.
- If sanding old finish, remove all sanding dust with a vacuum or cloth dampened with mineral spirits.
Stained or Painted Wood:
- Follow manufacturer’s directions for application of stain or paint.
- Make sure surface is thoroughly dry before applying Behr Polyurethane Floor Finish.
- Refer to manufacturer’s label for dry times.
- For best results use Behr Fast Drying Water-Based Wood Stains and finishes.
Unfinished surface preparation:
- Sand all wood surfaces in the direction of the wood grain to desired smoothness.
- Remove all sanding dust with a vacuum followed by wiping with a cloth dampened with water.
