How to Apply BEHR PREMIUM® Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain

Skill:  Intermediate DIY'er

With BEHR PREMIUM® Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain, you can achieve the variation of color found in some natural stone.

For Best Results:

Before applying any stain, it is essential to have a properly cleaned and prepped surface.

For new or uncoated surfaces, refer to: Preparation of Uncoated Surfaces for Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain.

For previously coated or weathered surfaces, refer to: Preparation of Coated Surfaces for Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain.

Suggested Supplies

  • Bucket
  • Broom (Stiff Bristle)
  • Brush (2"-2½")
  • Bucket Grid
  • Chemical Resistant Gloves
  • Extension Pole
  • Hose
  • High pressure Nozzle
  • Mop
  • Paint Can Opener
  • Paint Tray
  • Paint Tray Liner
  • Protective Apparel
  • Pump Sprayer
  • Rags
  • Roller Cover
  • Roller Frame
  • Stir Stick
Step 1

Once the surface is cleaned, prepped and has no sealer or coating present, you can apply the stain. Apply the stain in small sections, approximately 4' x 4'. Work quickly and feather edges. Apply with a high quality pump sprayer at a fine spray setting, using a circular motion.

TIP:
If you are using more than 1 can, intermix all to ensure color uniformity. Make sure to stir before applying.
Step 2

To achieve an even appearance, back roll immediately after spraying with a 3/8" nap roller or pad applicator.  Use the appropriate spread rate per gallon. Use when the air and surface temperatures are 50-90 degrees F.

TIP:
Spread rate for rough surfaces: 250-400 sq. ft. Spread rate for smoothe surfaces: 400-500 sq. ft. An additional coat will provide a darker, more uniform color.
Step 3

For additional protection, apply a sealer topcoat. Allow stain to dry at least 4 hours before applying a topcoat.

TIP:
Horizontal surfaces may be subject to premature wear. Periodic touch-ups may be necessary.
Step 4

Coating will dry to touch in hour. Allow first coat to dry for 4 hours before deciding if a second coat is necessary.

Make sure that the surface is fully cured before use.
Allow 24 hours for light foot traffic.
Allow 72 hours for heavy foot traffic and furniture.
Allow 7 days before subjecting to automotive tires.
Allow 30 days before rinsing or cleaning with a mild detergent.
