How to Stain a Table with BEHR® Advanced Formula Oil-Based Wood Stain

Got a table that needs a fresh start? We can help. BEHR® Advanced Formula Oil-Based Wood Stain does the trick for a variety of wood surfaces, so we’ll use this product to bring out the table’s inner beauty.

For Best Results:

Start your interior stain project by cleaning the surface and lightly sanding the wood.

Apply BEHR® Oil-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to prevent streaks and blotches.

Suggested Tools & Supplies

  • Sandpaper (120, 220, 320 and 400 Grit)

  • Sanding Block

  • Cheesecloth

  • Latex Gloves

  • Mini Foam Applicator

  • Multi-Purpose Shop Rags

  • Metal Can Opener

  • Paint Thinner

  • Painter's Tape

  • Plastic Containers

  • Drop Cloths

  • Tack Cloth

  • Natural Bristle Brush

  • Safety Glasses

  • Screwdriver

  • Step 1

    Using a sanding block and 220 grit sandpaper, give the wood a gentle sand, then wipe away the remaining dust with a lint-free cloth.

  • Step 2

    Apply the BEHR® Oil-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner and let it penetrate the wood for 20 minutes.

  • Step 3

    Apply the BEHR® Advanced Formula Oil-Based Wood Stain.

  • Step 4

    Allow the stain to penetrate for 3-5 minutes, then wipe with a lint-free cloth. Repeat steps to achieve a deeper color. Let the stain dry for at least 12 hours.

  • Step 5

    Apply two thin coats of BEHR® Fast Drying Oil-Based Polyurethane to protect your table for years to come. Lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper between coats.
