Usage SummaryBlank space if empty.
PreparationBlank space if empty.

Proper surface preparation is required.

  • Exterior Wood Surfaces: Replace rotting or unstable boards and remove loose splinters.
  • For failing coatings or to remove loose wood fibers, use a product such as BEHR PREMIUM® No. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper followed by BEHR PREMIUM® No. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner to neutralize the wood.
  • When No. 64 is not needed, a product such as No. 63 MUST be used to remove mill glaze and clean the wood surface.
  • After using either No. 64 or No. 63, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer.
  • When rinsing with a pressure washer, use the broadest spray pattern while keeping the nozzle at least 24" away from the surface. Allow area to dry at least 24 hours before coating. Lightly sand to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz.
  • Concrete Surfaces: Avoid areas that are structurally weak or subject to hydrostatic pressure above 8 psi.
  • Allow new surfaces to cure for 30 days.
  • Use a stripper product to strip peeling coating.
  • Use an etcher product to clean and etch uncoated concrete or No. 990 Concrete & Masonry Degreaser & Cleaner on sound, coated surfaces prior to coating.
ApplicationBlank space if empty.
  • Use product when air and surface temperatures are between 50-90˚ F (10-32˚ C).
  • Avoid applying in direct sunlight or to hot surfaces. Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours. The surface must be completely dry before application.
  • Avoid painting if humidity is expected to be greater than 80%.
  • Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity. Stir product occasionally throughout application.
  • DO NOT THIN PRODUCT. For nail holes and cracks up to 1/4", completely fill in with Textured DECKOVER® coating using a nylon/polyester brush and allow to dry prior to rolling.
  • Deep nail holes and cracks may require additional filling.
  • For edges, corners and in between wood boards, apply using a nylon/polyester brush.
  • Use pressure while rolling and apply a generous, even coat using a 1/2" nap roller.
  • For a smoother texture, use a brush or thinner nap roller (i.e. 1/4").
  • For vertical surfaces such as railings, use a nylon/polyester brush or roller and apply two thin coats at a spread rate of 400 sq. ft. per gallon.
  • Do not use with airless sprayer.
  • For optimum performance, film uniformity, leveling and to cover cracks, a second coat MUST be applied.
  • Maintain a wet edge when applying.
Dry TimeBlank space if empty.
  • 4-6 hours before recoat. Dries to touch in 4 hours.
  • Wait 24-48 hours before light foot traffic. 72 hours to full cure.
  • Additional dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity.
  • Premature heavy traffic will cause coating failure.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too thick to use a roller or brush Bought this two weeks ago, just went to apply. Mixed well with a drill or so I thought. Couldn't roll or brush on. Had to go get trowels to apply and then use the roller to texture it. Leads to a very uneven coat and one can barely covered 36 square feet. The job is started now and I don't know if the other 3 cans will be enough. Crap product. Never again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from THICK as molasses. I had used this on a small balcony surface before this latest porch deck renewal. As one of the few stains that offers a non-slip texture, this product was the choice for me. Just know what you're getting before you proceed. This is a very THICK consistency stain, almost more of a sandy/rubber paint. I applied it on a clean, belt-sanded 20 year old deck and a new set of wood steps, using a large sash brush, after failing with a 15mm roller sleeve (just too thick and clumsy). You have to maintain a wet edge with clean brush-marks and not rework as you go (or it clumps, pulls up). Also, applying in direct sun can speed up the skin-over and clumping in the can/tray. If you're methodical AND patient, you get a nice, thick, textured coating. Used two cans on 2 coats of about 80 sq. feet, so about 20-25% the coverage of normal solid stain.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Had to remove product. This product was WAY to thick to spread. My wife started and complained that it was very thick and difficult to spread. Instead of believing her, I told her that it is supposed to be a little thicker than paint. However, after she had painted nearly all the rails and spindles, I helped her and realized that we never should have used the product. It was the consistency of drywall mud. It wouldn't pick up on a 3/8" nap paint roller, and when it did, it wouldn't apply to the surface. A paint brush was manageable for about 5 minutes until the product filled the brush so much that the brush wouldn't apply product any longer. I returned to the store to ask if this was normal. They said yes. We opened a new can to see if it was the same consistency as the can I bought. The new can was much thinner, similar to paint. The store said that when this product is tinted, it can thicken like mine did, but it should still apply OK. They sold me one of the Behr mesh roller covers that is specialized for this project. The roller worked only marginally better then regular rollers. The best way to apply was use this roller (which makes the surface look like a very thick stamped ceiling), and then smooth it out with a brush. When the mesh roller cover didn't work, we quit using the product. However, we had to spend an entire Saturday sanding down all the spindles and railings that we had already "painted". We are going to use standard exterior paint on the rails and spindles. We are now farther behind on this project than when we started and wasted nearly $100 on this product, just to spend more time removing it. Again, Home Depot mentioned that adding tint to this product can cause it to thicken. But mine changed from thick paint to drywall mud. I would NOT recommend adding tint, but if you do, check the consistency before you leave the store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality Bought 6 gallons of this product, plenty for our deck. Cleaned & Prepped area prior to applying. It’s been barely 3 weeks and it’s coming off. Not only was this expensive but the color did NOT match the product label. Cape Cod Gray looks like white. Awful product, I’m so disappointed after all the money we spent not to mention the work involved that this looks like this. NEVER, again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall Great Deck Finish This was my 2nd time using this product over a 5 year old treatd wood deck. First time was likely too early on deck wood life. This time, after preparing the surface and primer, looks like it will be the charm. The 2nd time has only been down 6 months.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Very Very Very UPSET. I am 74 Yrs. old and for all interior painting and outdoor staining projects I have always used Behr products. In this case I have $90.00 worth of stain that is so thick It can not be applied and will not soak into properly prepared wooden deck stairs and floorboards, and an unfinished project.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great finish Worked great! And looks great 1 year later. I wish the instructions recommended using the non-textured product for the first coat. The texture does limit coverage and if you’re not careful you can miss spots “below” the texture. a starter coat could prevent any misses. And adding the texture for the second coat would still look awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beauty with protection We retired in Oregon where the weather exacts a heavy toll on unprotected exterior wood railings. We purchased Deckover after extensive preparation on our railings. I tried several different application methods. The coverage and wood adherence was excellent. I followed the directions for application and after almost two years, the railings look as good as when the Deckover was first applied. I was skeptical of the 25 year coating life, but in spite of over sixty inches of rain a year, I believe that Deckover was the best choice I could have made. Instead of an eyesore, our railings are a real asset to the exterior of our home.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful Deck was painted 2 months ago. It is a mess because foot prints, dog prints, dirt, you name it, all stick to it. The deck was previously painted with the older formulation.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pasty and difficult to apply I have been a big customer of Behr products for years, but this one missed the mark! The consistency is way too thick to make it easy to apply. I am modestly happy with the look and feel, but there's no way I would recommend this or buy it again unless Behr finds a way to thin it out. I can't even get a brush in between the deck boards to get the areas the roller wont get to.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from looks great Went on great w/ recommend prep work. Unfortunately my flower containers have dripped onto the deck, leaving white alkaline staint on the Deck over. Guess it was the fertilizer in the flowers. Any suggestions on how to remove these stains?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent deck paint I read about this new deck over textures paint and decided to give it a try. I have an older pressure treated deck that was first done with regular redwood paint. But wouldn’t last long. It was slippery in the winter. Therefore, the advanced deck over. I went with the recommendation from my local Home Depot. Didn’t realized the first coat needed to be with a 1/2 inch nap roller. Wait four hours then use the deck over thick texture roller made for this paint. It gave a good deep texture bubble effect. Easy to walk on and non slippery finish. I couldn’t be more happier. A beautiful way to put new life in and old deck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Disappointed I am so disappointed in the DeckOver! My deck is a year and a half old and decided to go with the Behr DeckOver product because I have used Behr paint before with no problems so I assumed the DeckOver would be fine as well. Not the case......I had my professional contractor apply this product of which I was there every step of the way watching it be done from beginning to end. The product definitely does not cover 75 square feet and there are places that are smooth and places that have texture. Not a uniformed look at all. I am out 4 gallons of this product which is expensive! I don't mind paying the price when a product works but this product I do not recommend. Now that I have read some of the reviews (which I should have done first), I see that others have had the same problems as well. I am definitely not happy about having to spend more money to fix my deck!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from absolutely will never use again After one year, peeling all over our 600 sq ft deck. We cleaned and followed every step recommended by Behr. After 500 dollars worth of paint and a year later we are slowly peeling this off. We rented a deck sander but basically does nothing. So we are on our hands and knees peeling this product off. Don't waste your money or time on this. Maybe by the end of next summer we will have this horrible product off our deck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent coverage and quality I’ve always preferred Behr paint. I wanted a textured paint for my deck since we have a pool and didn’t want anything too thick. This paint provided the right thickness & texture.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE PRODUCT When we purchased this at Home Depot we actually spoke with a representative from Behr. We told him our deck was 12X20. He recommended the Advanced deck over since our deck was older and we just wanted a nice facelift for the next year or so. He told us 2 gallons would be enough for the two coats that was needed. Which we now know is way off. We told him we wanted it to have a smooth finish so he picked out the rollers that would be perfect which was 3/8. The can says 1/2 inch. We were excited to begin our project until we opened the can and looked at the “paint.” We tried to use a brush to fill the cracks and thought something had to be wrong with the paint because it was so thick it was extremely difficult to spread. We opened the other can yo make sure it was the same and it was. We mixed it up really good hoping that would make it thinner. Nope. We got the roller out and tried that on the railings. Nope. It wouldn’t even adhere to the roller. We purchased the 1/2 inch roller thinking it would help. Nope. We tried everything to make the process less painful and used up the two gallons. Obviously two gallons is not enough and we still have the rest of the deck floor and all the rails to go and that’s just the first coat. A spatula would have worked better. So now we are already started and have to finish. It sure didn’t go on like the video.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I have a very weathered deck and I was considering ripping up the old VERY weathered wood and replacing it with new wood. However I didn't have the time (or desire) to take on that project this year so I opted for the Behr Advanced Deck Over product. I am so glad I did! This covered and filled in my weather beaten deck surface and made it look like a new composite type decking. The product covered and spread excellent and was very forgiving for wood with lots of cracks, holes and knicks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Behr Deckover My deck was in need of serious repair, to the point where I was considering replacing it, until my dad told me about Behr Deckover. I decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did. Not only does my old deck look great but also I just extended its life and saved money in the process. I highly recommend this product.

Deckover to the rescue with lots of colors and textures to choose from and ease of application it was a no brainer. It's not magic you do have to follow the proper preparation instructions and application instructions. Take your time its not like regular paint that you slather on . By doing small sections at a time we have created a beautiful safe textured back deck that we can now enjoy again! Thank you Behr decover!!! And thank you Home depot for your speedy delivery.
