PreparationBlank space if empty.

The following steps and products are recommended for best results.

  • All surfaces must be clean, sound, dry and free of any dirt, oil, and grease before application.
  • Wood Surfaces: Replace rotting or unstable boards and remove loose splinters. Remove mildew stains, dirt, oil and grease with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner prior to application.
  • Use a product such as BEHR PREMIUM NO. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper (must be followed by NO. 63) to remove all loose wood fibers, peeling paint/stain or deteriorated coatings prior to application of DeckOver.
  • On new wood, use NO. 63 to remove mill glaze and open the pores of the wood. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before coating.
  • Concrete Surfaces: Avoid areas that are structurally weak or subject to hydrostatic pressure above 8 psi. Allow new surfaces to cure for 30 days.
  • Use a stripper product to strip peeling coating.
  • Use an etcher product to clean and etch uncoated concrete or NO. 990 Concrete & Masonry Degreaser & Cleaner on sound coated surfaces prior to coating.
ApplicationBlank space if empty.
  • Use product when air and surface temperatures are between 50-90˚ F (10-32˚ C).
  • During application, avoid exposure of container to direct sunlight. Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours.
  • Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity.
  • Stir product occasionally throughout application. DO NOT THIN PRODUCT.
  • For nail holes and cracks up to 1/4", completely fill in with DeckOver coating using a nylon/polyester brush and allow to dry prior to rolling. Deep nail holes and cracks may require additional filling.
  • For edges, corners and in between wood boards, apply using a nylon/polyester brush. Use pressure while rolling and apply a generous, even coat using a 1/4-1/2" nap roller. For a smoother texture, use a brush or thinner nap roller (i.e. 1/4").
  • For vertical surfaces such as railings, use a nylon/polyester brush or roller and apply two thin coats at a spread rate of 400 sq. ft. per gallon.
  • Airless spray is recommended for experienced applicators only; use a .027" - .035" tip with no mesh filter at 2400-3200psi.
  • When spraying vertical surfaces, apply a very thin coat (one pass only) and do not back brush/roll.
  • When spraying horizontal surfaces, follow the standard spread rate of 75 sq. ft. per gallon.
  • For optimum performance, film uniformity, leveling and to cover cracks, a second coat MUST be applied.
  • Maintain a wet edge when applying.
Dry TimeBlank space if empty.
  • 4-6 hours before recoat. Dries to touch in 4 hours.
  • Wait 24-48 hours before light foot traffic. 72 hours to full cure.
  • Additional dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity.
  • Premature heavy traffic will cause coating failure.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Behr Deck Over I have never wrote a review on a product, however I feel that I must on this one. Hopefully the advanced deck over is better than the original, I am now in the process of stripping my deck due to the product peeling everywhere. I applied it as directed, and this is what I got a few years later. Very disappointed in Behr. The picture is prior to starting to strip it off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mismatched Color We started looking at this product a couple years ago. We got the color brochure. Matched in 3 different light areas. We picked Bordeaux which seemed to match best. It’s “purple”! We purchased a total of 9 gallons ( at different HD stores). Also contacted customer service via email,(never got a response) asking if perhaps the color “recipe” was wrong. It’s not even close to the color we picked! Our bad for not painting a sample board. So, be aware! Not impressed with this product at all!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not use I prepared product as instructed. The product traps water under the coating causing the wood to rot. The only way to remove product is sanding down to bear wood.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy deckover paint I have used it and prepped very well, following all steps. After first coat, paint is bubbling in many areas. I have much leftover paint because I bought when it was on sale. Do not waste money on this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I wouldn’t use it I have been dealing with peeling and blistering for a few years. I can’t clean anything off the surface. I will sand my whole deck to remove this product and go back to stain

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Should have read reviews, Blistering and Peeling I loved the Brand and used it for other applications. My deck was a bit weather so as others have stated I read directions and prepped for just over a week, cleaning, filling cracks and imperfections with exterior use all purpose wood filler, sanded, cleaned again, waited for fully dry after 72hours of hot dry days last March. Applied 2 coats and now I'm noticing bumbling up, blisters. I used this since was thick ad said to help fill the cracks and add life for a long time. I hate doing this stuff and was only able to due to time off from covid. Waste of time and effort. Not have to try to time do it again or pay someone else and deciding on the proper product as this stuff seems to be garbage with a common issue from customers of blistering after just a year regardless of how well you prep. Extremely poff.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Color The color looks like chalky glue. Isn’t it supposed to look like wood grain?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible finish between cracks I spent an entire weekend working on my deck. Wish I would have been playing with the kids instead. Prepped exactly as recommended. I rolled on 2 coats as instructed with coverage rate similar to recommended ( about 75 sq feet/gallon). Used a half inch nap. Ended up with ugly connecting pieces of paint between deck boards all over the deck. Went through 6.5 gallons between the deck and the spindles. Not sure what to do now, as cutting through these pieces with a knife does not really make them look any better. Huge waste of time and money unless behr can come up with a good solution.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Way too thick to apply with roller or brush I bought two 5-gallon buckets of Behr Premium Advanced Deckover. The consistency of the deckover was similar to thick tar. Both buckets were like this. Using a roller was fruitless - the roller would just roll over the surface and not pick up any deckover. The bristles on a brush would bend rather than penetrate the surface to pick up some deckover. Only a putty knife can get any deckover... just imagine how long it would take to finish a deck using a putty knife...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Product! I read all the reviews beforehand and what I learned was preparation was key. Spring of 2019 I power washed, used a deck cleaner and rented a sander and sanded the whole 16 x 20 deck. 5 days it took from prep to dry. Applied 2 coats and the next spring, it's bubbling up and peeling like old wallpaper. I worked so hard on this deck for this to happen. Will not use any Behr products again and I tell my friends to not use this brand as well. Pictures are attached - Rainy day in Ohio.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling/Chipping This deck paint is great until it isn’t. After a year or so, It starts to peel and chip. You wouldn’t think it’s a big deal is kind of a high traffic area so you try to remove it and it’s near impossible. Their response to this is why I am writing this reply. A SANDER WILL NOT WORK TO REMOVE THIS. I’ve tried nearly everything a torch, sander, etc. the only way to get it off is chipping. Super frustrating that they recommend their products to put another coat in areas chipping. Well that would be nice if the entire thing wasn’t chipping. Do not buy this unless you only want it to last a short amount of time and have a couple of miserable weekends trying to remove it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from do not use this product! i bought this deck coating at the end of the 2020 summer and it was applied by a professional. after application I found that it stains very easily from normal foot dirt and leaves. I also found that the deck gets soo warm in the sun that you cannot walk barefoot on it. I have never had this problem with previous deck paints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Survived Montreal Winters! I've been repainting by deck almost every 2 years with various other products (Sico, Olympic) that looked promising for 3 seasons, but were not able to survive Canadian winters. This product is an exception. June 2020, I completely stripped the other stains, cleaned the deck and repainted with 2 coats of Advanced Deck Over. After an heavy winter and spring finally here, my expectation were no different then with other products. I anticipated disaster (peeling, flacking, discoloration), however Behr impressed me. The deck looked like new, no signs of aging or touch ups required. Bravo Behr product team! June 2022 will be my best cage if this is truly the best deck restoration product on the market, however we are definitely on to a great start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage Great product for old deck. Very thick formula but easy to apply. Covers most of the cracks in the wood giving it a fresh look. I just hope it will last long.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Deck Makeover If you want your deck to look fresh and new, this is the DIY stuff to use. My old weathered deck full was full of gaps and large splits in the wood. This not only fills the gaps but withstands harsh winter conditions. Highly recommend this product and it is easy to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Looks Like New! The Home Depot associate who suggested this product said it was "like iron!" He was right. Not only did it look great on my deck but 6 months later the deck cleaned right up with a mop and looked like I just stained it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Short term fix, peeling off in strips This product was recommended to me by Behr and I used it to bring my old deck back to life. For several months, it held up and then I started to notice that like paint, it was wearing off on the steps. I should tell you that I only use the deck steps on average once a month, so they are by no means a high traffic area. By this spring, it was peeling up and off the wood in defiant strips. I am so upset. I should have listened to my dad and just used a stain. The quality of this product does not live up to its marketing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful Coverage I have a outside deck in Hawaii. Hilo Home Depot recommended this paint over Porch Paint. We bought 10 gallons. My painter found it applied thin. He kept re-coating till the paint was gone. Here's the weird thing - the application was thick so that it took hours to apply - yet it dried thin and came out streaked. It neither looks like pain or stain. It just looks bad. We will have to paint over it. Then I read multiple reviews that it peels! I call the Hilo Home Depot to complain and they said that they were trained to recommend this paint. I have sent my complaint to Home Depot Customer Service and we'll see if I get a reply.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used to refinish interior plywood subfloor I used this to refinish an interior plywood subfloor that had been under really disgusting 40 -year-old carpet with pets and kids and was in bad condition. I did use an orbital floor sander with 60 grit sandpaper to go over the floor quickly first, and I also didn't follow the instructions. This stuff is super thick, like peanut butter. It's basically a wood filler/paint combo. After struggling to apply it with the 1/2 nap roller Behr recommends and finding it thick and uneven and clumpy, I decided to try my own method based on the idea that its more like wood filler than paint. Applied it with a plastic finishing trowel, then went over it with a large paint pad to smooth out the trowel lines. Came out much better that way and my plywood subfloor looks great.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Paint Bubbling/Peeling I scraped and sanded my stairs then cleaned them to make sure there was no residue of anything. I let dry for a solid week before applying my first coat. Went on easy for a thick product. Applied the second coat the next week with little to no traffic on painted surface to allow for a good dry surface. Applied the second coat and within a couple of weeks bubbling began to appear on both the horizontal and vertical surfaces. It's just a matter of time before the bubbling will tear and begin to peel off. Attempting to call Behr but customer service is only available between 6am - 3pm weekdays. I'm attempting to find time during my work to call.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I use this all the time I have used this on my deck and concrete, its the best paint, the adhesion is excellent, the waterproof feature is perfect, it has kept my deck looking new for years,i even painted it on top of concrete that had carpet glue on it and it adhered, used it on bare concrete and it worked, it has a beautiful pearl shine to it, and it feels so nice walking on it bare foot, I highly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PROPER PREPARATION is critical If you do not follow the proper guidelines for installing this product, do not attempt a DIY and then claim the product does not work. 95% of the failures is because the surface is not properly prepared. I have used this product and its earlier version on several docks/decks and NO peeling or complaints from the homeowner. Once properly installed, it saves thousands of dollars in replacing splintered pressure treated deck planks. With two coats, the surface looks like a composite deck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prime first When using deck over on your wood deck if you want it to last and bond great first oil base prime deck. Because deck over is not a stain its like a rubbery paint. If you oil base prime (kilz) it will be very durable

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible to apply, waste of money This was the worst paint I have EVER worked with. It's so thick that it does not spread and applying with a roller leaves a very rough surface. I had to apply with hand brush and a sponge pad, even then the paint would not fill small cracks and the second coat does not look any better than the first. It’s taking days to apply, and I’m on my 3rd can for a small sized deck. Doesn't go on smooth and didn't want to stick to certain areas. I cannot stress enough was a waste of money this product is or how awful it is to apply.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but inconsistent My deck was constructed in 2009 and I initially used another Behr product to stain it and to maintain it after. When it was time for a re-do in 2016 I used Behr DeckOver. It lasted 4 years before needing a total redo. I did it in September 2020 after replacing several rotted boards. It is essential to meticulously follow the preparation instructions before applying this product or it will fail miserably. I purchased two 5 gallon buckets of DeckOver. The first was perfect in consistency. The second was defective and virtually unusable. It was too thick and even using a professional mixer attachment on my drill it was impossible to break up clumps in the bucket. I returned it to Home Depot for a replacement which was perfect. I would also note that DeckOver does not fill in nail holes and cracks as claimed. Even with proper preparation and the application of two coats I still have visible nail holes and cracks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible This was the worst "paint" I have ever purchased to paint a deck with. It's so thick and nearly impossible to work with. It will not stick to a half inch roller nap as it recommends. Ended up having to hand brush everything on. Took forever and used 4 cans and barley got one coat on a medium sized deck. Doesn't go on smooth and didn't want to stick to certain areas. Not worth the time and money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not hold up We painted our deck last May with deck over. It looked awesome at first but the first hard rains it started to peel everywhere and the Texas sun makes it bubble. Do not buy this for patios or Decks. It’s expensive, extremely hard to spread and doesn’t last a year. I wish I would have read these reviews before purchasing.
