Usage SummaryBlank space if empty.
PreparationBlank space if empty.

(The following steps and products are recommended for best results.)

  • Use a product such as BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper to remove loose wood fibers, latex, oil-based and 100% acrylic coatings on new or weathered wood.
  • BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner MUST be used following NO. 64 to clean, brighten & neutralize wood.
  • When NO. 64 is not needed, use a product such as NO. 63 to clean and brighten the wood surface and to remove light to medium exterior stains caused by mold, mildew, algae & fungus. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before coating.
  • On new wood, use a product such as NO. 63 to remove mill glaze and open the pores of the wood. Lightly sand to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz.
ApplicationBlank space if empty.

(For best results, a pad applicator is recommended over large areas.)

  • Must apply between 40-90˚F (4.5-32˚C). Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours. The wood surface must be completely dry before application.
  • Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity. DO NOT THIN PRODUCT. Stir product occasionally throughout application. Test product for penetration and color on a small hidden area before proceeding.
  • Use a nylon/polyester brush for areas requiring more accuracy. Use of rollers should be limited to rough surfaces only.

BEHR PREMIUM® Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 352.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Color Retention Better Than Expected over 8 yrs I stained my red wood arbor with Behr stain & sealer 8 years ago and I was amazed how well the color held up despite the years exposed to the weather. All vertical pieces retained much of its original color. Where it faded most were the top surfaces where I could not see. I plan to sand and re-stain the entire arbor using the same product again to ensure it will last another 8 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply This was easy to apply and had great coverage. The drying time was also not as long as other brands. Behr is a great product and will continue using Behr.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Deck is still tacky after four days I’m a professional painter and applied two thin coats on a deck. It is still tacky after four days. I’ve read reviews of others having this problem. Response being wash it with warm soapy water? Or strip and redo , oh no!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful results! My “professional “ contractor applied the semi transparent sealer to my house and deck. I believe the problem I have is a combination of the contractor doing a poor job using an inferior product. After 8 ( eight) days the house and deck were still wet and unusable. 8 hours and a bag of rags later the deck is barely usable. I was not the purchaser, no recourse!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Still feels sticky, after 96 hours with one coat, After applying thin 1st coat , waiting 96 hours, it still feels sticky. I Followed directions from can completely. I am not satisfied at all. It has not rained actually been perfect weather and temperature. I still like applying to a whole other deck. I’m trying to decide on if I should even do it with this product, or cut my losses and by a different product. Help or suggestions please.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tacky in Texas Last month we had our painter stain the deck with Behr Premium Waterproof and sealer. August has been unbearably hot but our deck is still tacky. My wife and I are incredibly stressed about it because of the expense and the fact that we chose this stain because of its apparent ease of use. This is very frustrating and we could really use some help. I would love to have this resolved and change my review.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Still Tacky after 4 days I stained my deck as directed 4 days ago and it is still tacky to walk on. I live in Atlanta which is hot and humid. Will it ever dry? Reviews on other sites say it must be stripped and use a different stain. UGH

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not last even one year Summer of 2019 I had my decks stained. The product already this spring had many bare spots on the wood. For sure don’t use the semi solid that I did on my other deck. That is peeling off in many places. I did proper deck preparation and had a professional painter apply. This is the second year in a row the product has not held up and the deck needed restaining

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Still tacky after 3 weeks and uneven I pressure washed and cleaned the deck before applying, but the surface is still tacky after about 3 weeks of drying. It feels like I'm walking on a sticky movie theater floor. Very disappointing. It also went on unevenly - the areas that were overlapped when I applied it are very obvious, even though I made sure to wipe up any excess material and drips. The thought of redoing this project makes me very sad... Ugh.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not hold up In June 2019, i cleaned and prepped my cedar deck. Lots of hours and work went into removing all old stain and getting it ready to reseal. I debated on which stain to use and finally settled on Behr premium semi transparent. The stain went down easy and the finished product looked good. Well, that look didnt last long. This spring i noticed many areas where the stain was flaking/peeling. Very disappointing considering the time it took to prep the deck. I live in Michigan which has fairly harsh winters but i would expect to get at least a couple years out of a stain. I dont recommend this product and will definately use another brand next time. This was the worst performing stain i have ever used. Would have rated 0 stars if that was an option. Save your money and buy something else.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks great but sticky Used the transparent waterproofing wood finish for two Adirondack chairs. It’s been over 72 hours, but they’re both sticky! I cleaned, sanded, and made sure to put two thin coats. Not sure what’s going on. Do I need to add a sealer? What can I do?? I spent so much time prepping and staining. This is heartbreaking Also, the Waterproofing Wood Finish, goes on more like a paint than a stain.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from followed the instructions to a T followed all pre-prep. was new pressure treated pine, super smooth, good quality... dried for a year... used all recommended cleaners (which are expensive but work, looked like bleached wood which i suppose is good)... let dry for over 24 hours, closer to 72. Did one coat, waited 3 hours.... did another coat waited 1.5 hours. coverage was per the can so did not over or under coat. the stain is still sticky and not absorbed into the wood at all. See the picture attached. This was not there during coat 1 or 2 or with 24 hours after applying.. .clearly the stain did not stain, and is acting more like a paint. Not sure if any animal caused this or what, but was not before coat 1 or 2, and not withing 24 hours of second coat. I will probably be applying for some sort of warranty claim. i mean does this look like a photo of a stain????

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Deck is still tacky after a week Applied this stain a full 7 days ago stain is still tacky did all proper prep striped brightened sanded washed dried proper time before application applied 2 thin coats and Still tacky. Also the color came out looking like a paint instead of stain. I definitely do not recommend this product especially if you want wood grain to show through. I am very disappointed at the results it was a complete waste of my time and money using this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the color I tried several samples because I couldnt decide what color to use with a gray house. I decided on semitransparent cordovan brown and LOVE it. We will see how it holds up ...fingers crossed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cedar Deck application I originally put this on my cedar deck in 2016, in 2017 we had a hail storm and it was chipped up from the hail. We weren't too worried about the small spots that got hit, but over the next year all of the flat surfaces have peeled up, and all south facing wood has peeled. I am refinishing my entire deck this year. I wasn't going to use this product, but since I had already purchased a couple more gallons, I am giving it one more chance. For painting my house I used Behr for everything, except a repaint of one room (Home Depot closed and no one else sells Behr in our city). I hope this lasts more than 2 summers this time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Paint - Not Stain!!!! I bought this at Home Depot on the advice of a salesman, for our new porch glider/rocker. The color was nice, however, this looks nothing like stained wood. This product makes our glider look like we applied an antiquing kit! I spent all of this money on a beautiful wood rocker/glider; and it is absolutely RUINED! I expected a stain to bring out the beautiful grain; instead it looks like a cheap painted import!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! For the last 2 summers, we have been replacing the fencing in our yard, one section per a summer. I pre-paint the cedar pickets and railings before we install the fencing. This paint provides excellent coverage and the 2-year old pickets look as great as the ones we finished last summer. One more section to go and I will definitely be using this paint again!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Peeling and had to replace in 2 years Put this on our deck in Tahoe. Granted I now see it's rated for moderate weather, which this definitely isn't, but 1/3 the lifespan seems pretty poor.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from STICKY after 3 days of dry time (no rain) I prepped the deck by power washing and brightening the deck prior to applying. Two thin coats have been applied, with dry time in between. After 4 days of dry time since the second coat, the surface is really sticky. Very disappointed. Also, I chose the Clear Waterproofing. The Clear 500-N is definitely not clear. However, I do like the color of the deck so I'm really not dissatisfied with it, just not what I expected. I purchased extra gallons of this product, since it does have a color and I was worried that when I need to reseal the deck I wouldn't be able to find this exact color. I guess the unopened cans will be going back if the deck continues to be sticky.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible 2 year ago a stain my 1 year old deck and you can see by the attached photo what it looks like going into the summer. I have attached photo so you can see how poor this product performs. now i am faced with stripping this off and finding a better quality deck stain. Will Behr stand behind the 6 year warranty it advertises. I have a 30ft by 12 ft deck to redo and a 30x15ft to redo.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is junk Built a 2000.00 deck and used semi transparant deck stain on it. Never again. I ruined my deck. Uneven and tacky after 1 week. When i walk on it you can see my foot prints. I see where this is a problem and all they can say is wash it. If you see a problem then take it off the market. Behr is out from now on i wanted Olympic but the sales associate talked me into Behr. Oh and yes I followed directions i'm not 10.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Frustrated Initially, I went to Home Depot and bought 2 gallons of BEHR premium semitransparent stain and sealer in a color called Woodchip to use to paint my deck. They did not have a can of that color in stock, so they mixed it. First, I learned the hard way that the color the paint is in the can is not the way it appears on Behr’s website or in their sample brochure. I was also struck by how thin the paint seemed to be. As a result, I had to buy two more gallons and ended up putting three coats of the paint on my deck in order to adequately cover it. This was a lot more work than I intended. I also noticed that the paint flaked off in several spots which I then had to repaint. Because of these problems, I plan to buy a different brand of sealer next time I have to do my deck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Hasn't been even a year! 6/3/2019 and wood and stain purchased at Home depot looks horrible! It was beautiful at first! But it's not strong enough for South Carolina weather! My deck looks 10 years old!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not dry uniformly - very disappointed I have a new construction home and the wood fence was installed around the property 10 months ago. I hired a professional painter to stain the fence with the Padre Brown color. Of course he prepped the fence properly and applied two light coats with a sprayer followed by rolling with the proper wait time between coats. It took a total of 20 gallons to cover the entire fence around the single family home including gates. The home is in Miami so we had the benefit of 3 dry very sunny days to perform the work. Overall, I am not satisfied at all with the results and I do not blame the painter. I chose the Behr product. If I look down the side of the fence and straight on, the color does not look uniform as if it did not absorb uniformly. Also, the stain to the touch at this point feels sticky almost like a rubber coating. After paying 1800.00 for the entire job, it will be a real shame if the stain starts peeling as many others have reported. Given the texture, I'd be surprised if it doesn't. I have used this painter before in past homes with no issues with stain and exterior paint work. He wanted to use another product but I suggested Behr this time and he complied. My bad for that. Perhaps, I will get an email from Behr suggesting something went amiss with the prep or application. I say nonsense to that if I do. I absolutely do not recommend.
