Behr’s 50 Shades of Grey

A close up detail of a silk tie and multiple gray-toned paint swatches.
Even if you haven’t read the books or are planning to see the movie 50 Shades of Grey this weekend, there are plenty of grey shades out there to pique your interest! In honor of the movie’s release, I’ve gone out and painted my nails today in an intriguing shade of grey…If you’ve ever lived with a grey before, you know it makes rooms feel very chic and glamorous. Grey is a color that adds instant polish and even an air of mystery to a space. They aren’t really demanding, but they do command attention. They set any tone you like from light and spacious to smoky and mysterious. I like tone on tone greys because it is easy to mix in other colors and change the mood of the room.

Layered shades of gray in the bedroom for a comfortably masculine look.
Grey ranges in value from cool to warm shades. Steel grey may be considered on the cool side, while mushroom can feel warmer. Layering warm and cool greys gives bedding a sophisticated and masculine look.

Mix and match textures when using tone on tone grays in a room.
Light to dark variations of grey works well too. Be sure to keep it interesting by using mix and match textures in a room that predominantly uses grey.

And here they are: Behr’s complete range of popular greys! They vary in subtlety from warm to cool and light to dark. Some even carry nuances of other colors like green, blue or even violet – but all are fascinating and unqiue!
Is there such thing as a “true grey” that perfect balance between warm and cool? We like to think it is Classic Silver PPU18-1.
Fifty paint spills showcasing different tones of gray.

Erika

What grey will go well with a jet black trim and German schematic or and brick

    • Deanna Ron says...

Hello Carolyn, thank you for visiting our blog!
With jet black trim and German schmear or brick, you’ll want a gray that complements both the depth of the black and the texture of the brick. Here are a few paint color suggestions that could work beautifully:
Classic Silver PPU18-11 – a versatile midtone gray that pairs well with both warm and cool elements.
Perfect Taupe PPU18-13 – A warm gray with taupe undertones.
Weathered White HDC-NT-21 – A soft warm gray that adds subtle contrast and warmth.
Chic Gray PPU26-11 – a light warm gray.

We do offer 8oz paint samples for purchase at the Home Depot so you can test these different gray tones to see which one you prefer the most.

I’m willing to paint the outside of my house and it’s metal so I would need an exterior latex enamel I believe an eggshell finish I like two colors one is the elephant gray and the other is the toasty Gray

    • Deanna Ron says...

      Hi Bryce,

Thank you for sharing your plans to paint the exterior of your home!
Regarding your color preferences, both Elephant Gray and Toasty Gray are excellent options. Here’s a quick comparison to help you decide:

Elephant Skin – A deeper, more dramatic gray with a bold presence. It pairs well with lighter trim or accent colors and gives a modern, grounded look.
Toasty Gray – A softer, warmer gray with subtle beige undertones. It’s inviting and works beautifully with natural surroundings and neutral accents.
If you’re still deciding, I recommend testing both colors on a small section of your exterior to see how they look in different lighting throughout the day.

Let me know if you’d like help choosing a accent color!

I painted a room a few years ago with a popular Behr gray. I don’t remember what it was. It’s cool, rather than warm. I want to paint an additional room with the same color. How can I find out what color I used? As I recall, it was the most popular Behr color for the year. It was 2020 or 2021. Sadly, the paint chip I used is buried in my husband’s black hole of a garage.

    • Deanna Torrez says...

Hello Elizabeth, thank you for visiting our blog! If you saw the name would that ring a bell on what the gray color possibly was?
I know some of our popular grays are Platinum PPU26-11, Silver Feather BWC-29, Dolphin Fin 790C-3 which are cool toned grays.

      Hope this helps!

  • Hello,
I’m looking to paint a newly finished basement and would like it to be a lighter gray that’s neutral and goes with blues and greens. I wasn’t sure about Fast As the Wind, Silver City, Classic Silver or Lunar Surface. I find Chic Gray to be too greige and Distant Star too blue and dark. I don’t want it to feel like an operating room cold and don’t want greige. Also, what trim would you recommend? We have a bathroom we’ll also be looking to paint there too.

    • Deanna Torrez says...

Hello Fredrick, thank you for reaching out!
Classic Silver is not too blue or too dark. Have you tested that color out? It also will go with blues/greens.
A trim color I recommend is Polar Bear 75.

      Hope this helps!

      Colorfully Yours,

I am looking for a gray to place on cabinets in a theatre room. We plan on doing an accent color of the Too Much Drama Red. Any suggestions?

  • Ashley R says...

We recently bought a house that the whole interior was painted tan. I am ,curious if a tan ceiling can be pared with gray walls. I really do not want to have to paint My whole houses ceilings, but I do not want tan walls.
Any thoughts on wall color ideas that would compliment/ work with the tan ceiling?

    • Larayne Boaz says...

      Hi Ashley,
Tan can be paired with gray but you want to make sure that the gray used is warm and have some of the same undertones as the tan. We have some nice warm grays and neutrals in our Neutrals section that you can try. You can grab the color chips from The Home Depot. Once you have narrowed down your selection, I suggest you try color samples before you commit. The color will look slightly different from a small chip to a large sample on the wall. Also, the lighting, time of day, and other items in the room may affect the color appearance.
Hoping one of these work for you!
Dove, Cotton Gray, Greige, Grey Mist, Park Avenue
If you need something warmer, try one of these neutrals: Sculptor Clay or Wheat Bread

      Colorfully yours,
      Larayne

I painted my master bathroom a Behr grey color and I cannot find the name of it easily. I believe it was either Keystone Grey or Whicker Grey, perhaps? It leans on the blue side and in my bathroom it’s a beautiful warm blue-grey (if that’s possible). Any insight or guesses would be appreciated! Would like to paint my bedroom the same color. Thanks!

Hi, I have leftover grey paints in elephant skin and classic silver. Would either of this would go with turquoise? Or should I go with a different grey paint? My walls are turquoise on top half, more than half and brown on the bottom half with chair rails all around the room. I want to paint grey over the brown. Thank you!

    • Diana Olvera says...

Hi Catherine – we feel that either Elephant Skin or Classic Silver could work well with turquoise, it really depends on whether you want the space feel lighter or darker, cooler or warmer. Elephant Skin would create a moodier and warmer look while classic silver make the space feel slightly cooler and more open.

      Colorfully yours,

  • Claudia says...

Hi! I need help choosing grey colors for my place. My bedroom has espresso furniture and not sure what would go with that. In my livingroom I have brown/tan couch and furniture. I also want an accent wall. Any suggestions? Thank you

    • Larayne Boaz says...

      Hi Claudia,
Warm neutral-grays would look nice with your furniture. Try Dove, Grey Mist or Greige. For an accent how about one of these options: Seeding, Sage Brush or Honey Mist. I suggest you try a color sample before you commit as the lighting, time of day and other items in the room may affect the color appearance.
      Colorfully yours

  • Ty says...

Light gray for south facing room (for a girls room so no blue or green undertones)?

    • Larayne Boaz says...

      Hi Ty,
Spun Wool is a nice warm light gray. If you want a little darker gray try Dove. Or for a warmer gray with red undertones; White Clay. I suggest you try a color sample before you commit as the lighting, time of day and other items in the room may affect the color appearance.
      Colorfully yours,
      Larayne

    Hello,
Thank you for your helpful information. We are remodeling a bathroom. We are looking for a light grey for the vanity/trim and a slightly darker grey for the walls. The countertop will be black leather granite.
What colors would you recommend for the vanity and walls?
    Thanks

  • Catherine says...

Hi, I have leftover paints of Elephant skin, Chic gray and Classic Silver. Which of those three would look best with turquoise. My walls has turquoise on the top and brown on the bottom with side rails all around. I want to paint gray over the brown. If none of the three paints would go with the turquoise, which gray would you recommend? Thank you.

  • Cheryl Christine Mendez says...

Hi there! My living room gets tons of natural light but my long hallway gets none at all. I would like to paint both the same color – a light, warm grey. Could you recommend a few colors that can resist getting completely washed out as well as keep my dingey hall from looking like a dungeon? Or should I paint these areas different shades, and if so, which? Thanks so so much!!!

    • Larayne Boaz says...

      Hi Cheryl,
Try Toasty Gray in your living room and then go a shade lighter in the hallways with Campfire Ash. The colors are so similar but Campfire Ash is just a shade lighter which will help keep your hallways from getting too dingey. If you prefer a darker gray for the living room, go a shade darker with Perfect Taupe. This has just a touch more color than Toasty Gray and will still look nice with Campfire Ash in the hallways.
      Colorfully yours,
      Larayne

Hallway is pretty long with four bedrooms off from it, but there is a skylight and the trim is white, so it’s reasonably bright . What would you recommend? Thank you ~

I am looking for a dark deep grey(not blue or green undertones) for walls in my dining room, it has white crown moundings, chair rails, door trims and 6″ baseboard. There are two doors on one side of room, the other has no windows but has a large gas fireplace inset and a patio door at the end that opens to a sunroom with southern exposure. The furniture is a mixture of dark and light cherry wood and floors are a blend of light and dark grey tones. Currently under construction so I cannot send photos. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Flannel Gray depending on lighting may have a lilac tone. It all depends on the lighting, house facing, décor and other factors. I will recommend testing it on your walls.

any recommendations for a gender neutral nursery color? we have gray shimmer on our hallway walls, looking for something that will complement gray shimmer but not with such “blue” undertones. also looking for something on the lighter side…white metal and loft space come to mind. would love your input.

        • Deanna Torrez says...

Yes of course, White Metal will work perfectly. Although if you want less blue then I will suggest Seagull Gray N360-1 or Evening White N460-1.
